‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Releases New Trailer and Fans Are Excited for King Ghidorah
The ‘Godzilla’ franchise has been on an impressive winning streak in recent years, evolving from a niche curiosity into a serious contender in the film industry. As the sequel approaches theaters, it aims to build on the momentum established by its predecessor.
This transformation began with ‘Godzilla Minus One’, which was produced on a budget of $15 million but went on to earn over $116 million globally, making it the highest-grossing Japan-produced ‘Godzilla’ film to date. It also made history at the Academy Awards by winning Best Visual Effects, becoming the first Asian film to win that Oscar.
Now, fans have received their first extended glimpse of the sequel with the release of a new trailer for ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’. The film is set to hit North American theaters on November 6, shortly after its Japanese premiere.
Once again written, directed, and featuring visual effects by Takashi Yamazaki, the sequel takes place in 1949, two years after the events of ‘Godzilla Minus One’, and continues the Shikishima family’s story as they face a new threat. Returning cast members Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe reprise their roles, ensuring the emotional depth that resonated with audiences in the first film.
The release date holds significant meaning within the franchise, as Japan’s November 3 release coincides with the anniversary of the original ‘Godzilla’ film’s debut in 1954, a date celebrated annually as Godzilla Day. This date also marks the release of ‘Godzilla Minus One’ in 2023.
This film will also be the first in the franchise to have a near-simultaneous global release, with North American audiences seeing it just three days after its Japanese debut. This rapid international rollout reflects the confidence that Toho and distributor GKIDS have in the film’s appeal.

Additionally, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is the first Japanese production fully shot for IMAX, utilizing high-definition digital cameras specifically certified for the format. This technical achievement indicates a film designed for the largest screens, showcasing the franchise’s evolution into a cinematic spectacle.
Hamabe expressed her excitement about returning to this world for a global audience, stating, “Following the previous film, I am grateful to be able to exist in the world of Godzilla Minus One as Noriko. Since this work will be released in Japan and the U.S. around the same time, I am very happy to be able to share Godzilla’s shocking return not only with people in Japan but also with those in America.”
Produced by Toho Studios and ROBOT, with visual effects by Shirogumi Inc., the sequel is set to be the highlight of this year’s Godzilla Day celebrations. Given the overwhelming success of ‘Godzilla Minus One’, anticipation for this follow-up has only grown as its release date approaches.
With the new trailer generating significant excitement online and a release strategy aimed at maximizing its global reach, ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ is shaping up to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the fall.
