Few fantasy realms are as cherished as Narnia, and few directors could tackle its origin story with such excitement as Greta Gerwig. After a lengthy period of speculation, casting news, and a shuffle in the release date, the first full promotional artwork has finally been unveiled. This striking image hints at a markedly different tone compared to previous adaptations.

The poster features a dark silhouette filled with swirling stars and radiant nebula light, set against a soft cosmic background. A winged horse soars through a bright lens flare at the center. The tagline reads “A Universe Begins,” with “A Film by Greta Gerwig” positioned above the title, ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew.’

Additionally, the poster confirms the film’s release date and format, indicating it will be shown exclusively in theaters on February 12, with an IMAX experience. This detail highlights how this release differs from a typical Netflix project. It follows a series of reveals that started in September with the film’s logo and the first behind-the-scenes image.

‘The Magician’s Nephew’ marks Netflix’s inaugural wide theatrical release. IMAX previews are set to begin on February 10, followed by the global release on February 12, with the film arriving on Netflix on April 2, 2027. It will also be the first Netflix film to enjoy a full exclusive theatrical window of 45 days.

Plans have evolved throughout the process. Initially, the film was slated for a Thanksgiving 2026 release, with a two-week exclusive IMAX run before streaming. However, a cast member’s injury reportedly delayed production by six weeks, allowing Netflix to broaden the rollout. IMAX noted that this delay presents an opportunity for a wide release with a complete theatrical window, supporting Gerwig and Netflix in this endeavor.

The film is based on C.S. Lewis’s 1955 novel, which serves as a prequel to ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.’ Although it is the first book in chronological order, it was actually the last one completed by Lewis. The narrative follows two children, Digory and Polly, who stumble upon the Wood between the Worlds after receiving a magical ring from their uncle.

Their journey takes them to the dying world of Charn and eventually to the creation of Narnia itself, as Aslan sings the world into existence. Gerwig has expressed her childhood fascination with the extraordinary concept of a cosmic lion bringing Narnia to life. The poster’s starry silhouette and luminous lens flare seem to encapsulate that sense of cosmic beginnings.

Newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell portray Digory and Polly. Emma Mackey takes on the role of Jadis, the White Witch, while Daniel Craig plays Uncle Andrew. Carey Mulligan appears as Digory’s mother, and Meryl Streep, confirmed through Empire’s cover story, voices Aslan.

The cast also includes Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough, and Susan Wokoma. Streep and Gerwig previously collaborated on ‘Little Women,’ where Streep portrayed Aunt March. Gerwig is also reuniting with her ‘Barbie’ collaborators Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who will compose the original score.

The scale of this project is significant. Gerwig is set to direct two Narnia films for Netflix, and this film is reportedly the most expensive in the streaming service’s history. The company has described the rollout as aligning with the scale and fandom of Lewis’s cherished books.

The books have sold over 120 million copies globally, and earlier film adaptations grossed a combined $1.6 billion. These figures help explain Netflix’s substantial investment and raise expectations for a new franchise built on a fresh foundation.

The poster art serves as a first impression, leaning towards mystery and wonder rather than a conventional storybook aesthetic. It refrains from depicting any characters, focusing instead on a singular image of creation. This restraint is fitting for a film that explores the very inception of a universe.

It also hints at the visual ambition that Gerwig is bringing to the project. With IMAX involved, the film is clearly designed for the grandest screens available. Fans are now eagerly awaiting a teaser trailer to see how the story will unfold.
