‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is bidding farewell to two beloved characters as Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver depart from the long-running ABC series following the Season 22 finale.

The emotional episode marked the departure of Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman from Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, as the couple chose to embark on a new adventure in Paris with their children. This finale held special significance for McKidd, as he directed the episode while also appearing on screen.

Reflecting on the experience, McKidd expressed that directing the finale during his last season felt deeply personal after nearly two decades on the show. He shared that taking the reins behind the camera during such a pivotal episode provided him with “a real sense of ownership,” describing the experience as “really empowering.”

The opportunity to direct came from longtime ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ producer and director Debbie Allen, who approached him early in the season. At that time, he was unaware that it would also serve as his farewell episode.

McKidd noted that the finale turned out to be one of the largest productions the show has undertaken in years. A significant bridge collapse sequence is central to the episode, necessitating an extensive set build and a complex filming schedule. According to McKidd, the production team dedicated weeks to set preparation and spent several days filling a massive water tank used during filming.

In the episode, Owen survives after his car goes over the edge during the bridge disaster. He then aids in rescuing injured victims before ultimately returning to the hospital. This near-death experience prompts the character to reevaluate his future and finally support Teddy’s career move to Paris.

McKidd explained that the storyline was crafted to complete Owen’s emotional arc after years of trauma linked to his military past. He revealed that Owen had always carried guilt from losing members of his platoon during his service in Iraq, and the finale allowed the character to achieve peace by saving another family in peril.

Reflecting on Owen and Teddy’s relationship, McKidd mentioned that the couple realized their need for one another after spending much of the season struggling to reconnect. He added that Owen ultimately learned to support Teddy’s ambitions instead of always trying to control their shared future.

Outside of the show, McKidd mentioned that he quickly transitioned into new projects after wrapping ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. He traveled to Scotland right after filming the finale to work on the upcoming ‘Highlander’ reboot and confirmed he will soon begin filming a psychological thriller series titled ‘The Only Suspect’ in London.

The actor also discussed his growing interest in producing through his company, Ferryman Films. According to McKidd, the company currently has several projects in development with studios including Disney, the BBC, and Amazon.

Even though his tenure as a series regular has concluded, McKidd emphasized that he is not completely closing the door on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’. He expressed his intention to return to direct future episodes and would be open to reprising his role as Owen if the opportunity arises.

McKidd also reflected on the enduring success of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, admitting there were years when cast members observed the rise of streaming platforms while they continued to create network television. However, he stated that the show’s longevity is a testament to its rarity and success. He described the show as a significant blessing in his life and expressed gratitude for everything it has provided him.

Kevin McKidd’s departure from ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ marks the end of an important era for the series. Owen Hunt has been one of the show’s most prominent characters over the years, and it seems fitting that McKidd had the chance to direct his own farewell episode. His willingness to return in the future also keeps the door open for fans who may not be ready to say goodbye. What are your thoughts on Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver leaving ‘Grey’s Anatomy’?
