Video game trailers usually don’t find themselves in discussions about highbrow cinema, but this year has blurred those lines more than anticipated. A single promotional video has even caused a website dedicated to movie enthusiasts to crash, and the internet is fully embracing the absurdity of the situation.

The footage in question is ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look’, a 27-minute deep dive released by Netflix in collaboration with Rockstar Games ahead of the game’s launch in November. This special, captured entirely from PlayStation 5 in-game footage, provides fans with their most detailed look yet at protagonists Jason and Lucia as they explore the fictional Vice City, following two previous trailers released over the years.

Since the footage streamed on Netflix, it found its way onto Letterboxd, the platform dedicated to logging and rating films. Users have quickly treated it like any other 2026 release. As of now, ‘An Extended Look’ boasts an average score of 4.2 out of five stars from over 32,000 logged reviews, placing it at number 34 on the platform’s list of the year’s top releases.

This ranking puts it ahead of several major theatrical releases from this year, including ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’, which is one of the highest-grossing films ever, currently sitting at a 4.1 average. It also surpasses other 2026 films like ‘The Invite’ featuring Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde.

Out of the approximately 32,000 reviews, nearly 24,000 users awarded ‘An Extended Look’ the maximum five-star rating, with many praising the stunning visuals and the new protagonist duo driving the sequel’s story. This level of enthusiasm has transformed what began as a marketing effort into a genuine cultural phenomenon, with fans engaging with it as seriously as they would with any awards contender.

However, not all reviews have been entirely serious. Some users have embraced the novelty of rating a video game trailer alongside actual films, humorously critiquing the format while still acknowledging the quality of Rockstar’s work. One review humorously noted that the “structure was a mess, narrative was vague and confusing” as if critiquing a traditional film, while also admitting the gameplay “looked incredible.”

This blend of genuine praise and playful commentary has helped the entry stand out even more on a platform not typically associated with video game content. Given how rare it is for a game trailer to land in the top fifty entries for an entire year of film releases, this ranking has become a topic of conversation in its own right, regardless of how ‘GTA 6’ performs upon its actual launch.

As Rockstar continues to build excitement for the game’s release on November 19, and with reports suggesting that the Netflix special could evolve into multiple episodes, it’s evident that this crossover between gaming and film culture is just beginning.
