Netflix has been broadening its definition of what constitutes engaging streaming content over the past few years. From live sports to comedy specials, the platform has sought to keep viewers entertained beyond traditional movies and TV shows. However, few could have anticipated the monumental success of a gaming crossover.

This week, Rockstar Games achieved a remarkable milestone with the reveal of one of the most eagerly awaited video games ever, ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,’ which became Netflix’s most-watched content during its debut week, surpassing all other shows and movies available on the platform.

The special garnered an impressive 31.1 million views on Netflix from its debut on August 27 to August 31, according to the streamer, outperforming every other title during that timeframe. The 27-minute preview also achieved the number one spot in 87 of the 93 countries tracked by Netflix, highlighting the immense demand for this long-awaited sequel.

This release represented a novel approach for Netflix, which secured a six-hour exclusivity window before the footage was made available on Rockstar’s official YouTube channel at 9 p.m. ET that same evening. The YouTube upload has since amassed over 17 million views, although Netflix’s viewership metrics typically yield higher numbers due to a different counting methodology.

Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of Nonfiction Series, described the collaboration as a sign of the platform’s evolving goals. “Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right,” he stated. “The anticipation and fandom surrounding ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ is unprecedented, and we’re honored that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first. It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”

The extended look was entirely composed of in-game footage from PlayStation 5, providing fans with the most extensive preview of ‘GTA 6’ to date, following two previous trailers released over the years. The special features protagonists Jason and Lucia, showcasing both cinematic and gameplay sequences set in the fictional Vice City, while hinting at the larger criminal conspiracy that drives the game’s narrative.

According to the game’s official description, Jason and Lucia become embroiled in a conspiracy across the fictional state of Leonida after a routine score goes awry, forcing them to rely on each other for survival. This footage comes ahead of the game’s official release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S.

The extraordinary viewership numbers emerged against a backdrop of unauthorized gameplay leaks that circulated online in the days leading up to the official reveal, reportedly from a hacker group named CyberLeek. Rockstar addressed these leaks publicly just before the Netflix premiere.

For context, Netflix noted that Tyler Perry’s ‘Beauty in Black’ Season 3 achieved its strongest debut week ever with 13 million views during the same period, underscoring how significantly the ‘GTA 6’ special outperformed the platform’s typical programming.

With the game’s official launch still months away, this record-setting preview indicates that the excitement surrounding ‘Grand Theft Auto VI’ is only set to grow, regardless of the platform hosting the conversation.
