HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Casts Young Voldemort as Fans Anticipate Season 2
The casting journey for HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ series continues to captivate fans as the show approaches its second season. With each new addition to the Hogwarts lineup, discussions among longtime followers of the franchise intensify.
Excitement has surged recently, particularly regarding the darker elements of the storyline. ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,’ which serves as the foundation for Season 2, introduces some of the most intricate characters in the wizarding world, and viewers are eager to see how these roles will be portrayed on screen.
Now, HBO has addressed one of the most pressing questions surrounding the series. Billy Barratt has been cast as young Voldemort, also known as Tom Riddle, marking one of three significant additions to the Season 2 cast. Lenny Rush will portray the beloved house-elf Dobby, while Bonnie Hill takes on the role of Ginny Weasley.
Barratt is no stranger to impressive performances. The young English actor made history as the youngest-ever International Emmy winner at just 13 years old for his role in ‘Responsible Child.’ Since then, his career has included notable works such as ‘Invasion,’ ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ ‘Crater,’ and ‘Bring Her Back.’
His casting also concludes months of speculation among fans. Many had suggested ‘Adolescence’ breakout Owen Cooper as a potential choice for Tom Riddle, although this rumor was never confirmed by HBO or any official sources.
Tom Riddle becomes pivotal in the plot of ‘Chamber of Secrets’ when he reemerges through an enchanted diary that ends up in Ginny Weasley’s possession. This connection makes Hill’s casting as Ginny particularly significant, as her storyline is closely intertwined with Barratt’s character throughout the season.
Interestingly, the production is opting for a younger portrayal than in the films. Barratt is reportedly in his late teens, aligning more closely with Riddle’s book age of 16, while Christian Coulson was 23 when he portrayed the character in the 2002 film adaptation.
Hill’s casting comes with some behind-the-scenes context as well. She takes over the role from Gracie Cochrane, who played Ginny in Season 1 and stepped away from the part after the season concluded.
Despite Barratt’s casting, a significant mystery still lingers: who will portray the adult Voldemort? HBO has kept this casting decision under wraps, making it one of the last major uncertainties for the show’s future seasons.
Names like Paul Bettany and Tom Hiddleston have been mentioned among fans, and even Ralph Fiennes, who famously played the character in five films, has commented on the topic without confirming any involvement. For now, all eyes are on Barratt to lay the teenage groundwork for the character before that eventual reveal.
The casting news for Season 2 coincides with reports that filming is already in progress, with several cast members confirming their return to set in August, ahead of the previously announced fall start. This head start comes as Season 1 of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ is set to premiere on December 25 on HBO Max, adapting ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.’
The core cast from Season 1 remains intact as they head into the new season, featuring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. They will be joined by John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, with Kit Harington also set to join Season 2 as Gilderoy Lockhart.
With Barratt, Rush, and Hill now confirmed, ‘Chamber of Secrets’ is shaping up to be a season characterized by new faces stepping into some of the franchise’s most iconic roles. Whether longtime fans will embrace this new interpretation of Tom Riddle remains to be seen when the season eventually debuts.
