The excitement surrounding Nintendo’s remake of one of gaming’s most iconic titles is palpable. ‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’ has been a cornerstone of 3D adventure design for nearly thirty years, and any effort to modernize it comes with high expectations.

That excitement intensified in June when Nintendo announced the remake would be available on Switch 2 during a Direct presentation. At that time, fans received only a brief teaser hinting at visual enhancements, leaving many eager for more details and speculating about the final product.

Answers came during Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, where an extensive gameplay trailer was unveiled along with the confirmed release date. The ‘Ocarina of Time’ remake is set to launch worldwide on Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, making it a significant holiday release just weeks before the arrival of GTA 6.

The new trailer provided fans with their most comprehensive look at how Nintendo has meticulously rebuilt the 1998 classic, which boasts a 99 score on Metacritic and is celebrated as one of the most influential games ever. Instead of merely updating textures, the remake appears to be a complete overhaul, adopting a semi-realistic visual style that aligns more closely with the original’s tone compared to the painterly aesthetics of ‘Breath of the Wild’ and ‘Tears of the Kingdom’.

In addition to the visual upgrades, Nintendo outlined several significant gameplay enhancements aimed at modernizing the experience while preserving the essence of the original. Link will now have the ability to jump, sprint with a new dash feature, and swim and dive, vastly expanding his movement capabilities beyond what was possible on the Nintendo 64. The remake also introduces a streamlined item-swapping system, allowing players to change equipment with a single button press instead of navigating cumbersome menus.

For the first time, cutscenes will feature fully voiced characters, adding a new layer of presentation that the original lacked. A new feature called Threads of Time will serve as an in-game quest log, assisting players in tracking their progress and determining their next steps, while a dynamic day-and-night cycle will bring Hyrule’s world to life in ways the N64 hardware could not support.

One particularly innovative addition allows players to hum directly into their controller’s microphone, enabling Link to replicate tunes on his in-game Ocarina rather than relying solely on button inputs. This small but thoughtful touch illustrates the care Nintendo has taken to modernize even the game’s most iconic mechanics.

Alongside the software announcement, Nintendo also revealed a limited-edition Zelda-themed Nintendo Switch 2 console adorned with franchise iconography to commemorate the milestone anniversary. The pricing was confirmed during the presentation, with physical copies of the game retailing for $69.99 and digital versions available for $59.99 through the Nintendo eShop.

With a solid release date, extensive new gameplay footage, and a host of quality-of-life improvements now confirmed, Nintendo seems poised to make this remake a definitive reintroduction to Hyrule rather than just a visual refresh. The timing, just ahead of one of the most anticipated gaming releases in history, only heightens the stakes for how well the Switch 2 version will perform commercially.
