Celebrity reactions to new films often come and go, but occasionally a review emerges from someone whose opinion carries significant weight. When that individual is one of gaming’s most renowned storytellers, people take notice.

Brad Pitt’s latest survival drama has already created a buzz since its theatrical release this week, marking the actor’s first collaboration with director David Ayer since ‘Fury.’ While reactions from regular moviegoers have been pouring in, one particular endorsement has stood out.

‘Metal Gear Solid’ creator Hideo Kojima expressed his emotional response to ‘Heart of the Beast‘ on X, describing it as a poignant tale of a veteran and a former military reconnaissance dog, both grappling with PTSD, as they navigate the harsh Alaskan wilderness in search of home.

Kojima specifically praised the film’s minimal dialogue, emphasizing that the bond between Pitt’s character and his dog resonates with genuine emotional depth. He admitted that the film brought him to tears, particularly noting that the reveal of the dog’s name, Odin, hits “like a body blow” by the end.

He humorously remarked on the absence of an official program or pamphlet for the film, a light-hearted comment that complemented his broader admiration for the movie’s craftsmanship.

Kojima’s reaction aligns closely with the film’s overall performance since its release. ‘Heart of the Beast’ currently boasts an 87% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with a robust 94% verified audience score, much of which highlights the relationship between Pitt and his canine co-star.

This emotional core was always intended to be the heart of Ayer’s film. Pitt has previously discussed how deeply Cameron Alexander’s screenplay impacted him even before filming, describing the experience of working alongside his four-legged scene partner in heartfelt terms.

“We tried to make every day a play day for him,” Pitt said of Uber, one of the German Shepherds portraying Odin throughout the film, in comments reported by Variety. He added that the dog often improvised, creating genuine moments that still resonate with him.

Pitt further described the experience of filming alongside the dog as something extraordinary, calling it “really kind of beautiful” to spend so much time with what he referred to as a beautiful beast. This sentiment is echoed by audiences on social media, with many viewers sharing similar emotional reactions to the film’s conclusion.

The narrative follows a retired Special Forces soldier who survives a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness alongside his combat dog, both carrying scars from years of perilous missions together. J.K. Simmons and Anna Lambe complete the film’s principal cast, with several dogs, including Uber, Seeka, Ryker, and Hondo, sharing the role of Odin on screen.

For a project that centers on a wordless emotional connection rather than dialogue-heavy drama, receiving such a reaction from a creator as esteemed as Kojima carries significant cultural weight. This kind of endorsement tends to spread quickly, especially among audiences who trust his storytelling taste across various mediums.

Whether this high-profile praise translates into sustained box office success remains to be seen, but the growing emotional consensus surrounding ‘Heart of the Beast’ indicates that this film is resonating well beyond its opening weekend numbers.
