‘Hocus Pocus 3’ Development Progresses at Disney
Disney is moving forward with a third installment in the Hocus Pocus franchise, with early development now in progress. The project will see the return of the original trio of stars, as Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy are all expected to reprise their roles as the Sanderson sisters.
The creative team from the previous sequel is also on board. Director Anne Fletcher and writer Jen D’Angelo, who contributed to Hocus Pocus 2, are set to continue their involvement with the new film.
There are early discussions about a potential theatrical release this time around. While the previous sequel debuted directly on Disney+, the studio is now contemplating a cinema release for the third film.
Jessica Virtue, who works in production for Disney Live Action, is overseeing the project. Although the film is still in its early stages, the participation of key cast and crew indicates that Disney is prioritizing this sequel.
The Hocus Pocus saga began in 1993 with the original film, which depicted three witches returning to modern-day Salem. Initially, it did not perform well at the box office. However, it gradually developed a loyal fan base through home video, TV broadcasts, and streaming, becoming a beloved Halloween classic.
Interest in the franchise ultimately led to a sequel released more than two decades later in 2022. This film revived the characters for a new generation and encouraged Disney to further expand the story.
The main cast members bring extensive careers to the project. Bette Midler is celebrated for her award-winning contributions to music, film, and theater. Sarah Jessica Parker is renowned for her leading role in Sex and the City and various films. Kathy Najimy has appeared in numerous popular comedies and family films throughout her career.
Currently, many details regarding the plot and release timing remain unclear, as the project is still in its early phase.
Disney clearly recognizes the long-term value in reviving familiar franchises, and Hocus Pocus is one of the few that has gained strength over time rather than fading away. The return of the original cast is a wise decision if they aim to maintain the charm that made the films beloved. However, the challenge will be to ensure that the third film feels fresh rather than simply repeating what fans already know. What are your thoughts on Disney continuing this story?
