Baseball enthusiasts faced a challenge this week when they attempted to find the Home Run Derby on their usual channels. For the first time ever, the T-Mobile Home Run Derby is not being broadcast on ESPN, cable, or even MLB.TV, leaving many viewers puzzled about where to actually watch it.

The simple answer is that Netflix now has exclusive streaming rights to the event, marking a significant change in how Major League Baseball presents one of its biggest non-postseason events. Here’s what led to this decision and what it means for fans trying to tune in.

Tonight marked a historic moment as it was the first time in the event’s 41-year history that fans had to access Netflix instead of ESPN to watch the Derby. The 2026 T-Mobile Home Run Derby streamed live and exclusively on Netflix starting at 8 PM ET from Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, with a pre-show kicking off at 7 PM ET. It was not available on ESPN, cable television, or MLB.TV.

This shift is part of a larger strategy by MLB to enhance its presence on streaming platforms. The 2026 season marks Netflix’s inaugural year of MLB coverage, which began with Opening Night featuring the Yankees and Giants on March 25. In addition to the Derby, Netflix is also set to stream the MLB at Field of Dreams game between the Twins and Phillies in Dyersville, Iowa, on August 13.

For the league, the benefits are clear. This partnership provides MLB with a way to reach younger and international audiences through a platform that operates in over 190 countries and 50 languages. However, whether this trade-off of traditional broadcast reach for streaming accessibility will resonate with long-time fans remains to be seen, especially for those who previously enjoyed the Derby for free.

As for watching the Home Run Derby on ESPN or MLB.TV, the answer is straightforward: no. The 2026 Home Run Derby is exclusive to Netflix for viewers in the United States and Canada, and an active MLB.TV subscription does not grant access since the event is blacked out on that service.

This blackout has confused many loyal MLB.TV subscribers who assumed their existing package would cover the Derby as it has in previous years. Unfortunately, it does not, and there are no alternatives through cable or ESPN’s apps either.

A Netflix subscription is necessary to watch, with plans starting at $8.99 a month for the ad-supported standard tier, and the platform no longer offers a free trial. However, subscribers to T-Mobile’s Netflix on Us wireless plan and certain Verizon plans may already have Netflix included through their carrier benefits, meaning no additional payment is required for those users.

Some fans have expressed dissatisfaction with this change. One frustrated viewer on a Yahoo Sports gameday thread mentioned they had canceled their Netflix subscription back in January after a price increase and had not particularly missed the service since.

The 2026 Derby featured a lineup that leaned heavily on local talent. Hometown stars Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper headlined a powerful group of baseball’s top sluggers vying for home run glory at Citizens Bank Park.

The complete lineup included Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber, Royals outfielder Jac Caglione, Red Sox catcher Wilson Contreras, Yankees first baseman Ben Rice, Rays third baseman Junior Caminero, Phillies star Bryce Harper, Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker, and White Sox rookie Munetaka Murakami.

Junior Caminero entered as the 2025 runner-up, while the previous year in Atlanta, Mariners All-Star Cal Raleigh made history as the first catcher to win the Derby, defeating Caminero 18 to 15 in the finals with his father pitching and his brother catching.

Heading into the night, the league’s home run leaderboard added extra excitement. Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies led with 32 home runs, followed by Yordan Alvarez of the Astros with 29, Ben Rice of the Yankees with 28, Hunter Goodman of the Rockies with 27, and Junior Caminero also at 27.

Ultimately, it was not one of the headline hometown favorites who claimed the title. Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker won the 2026 Derby crown after an exhilarating final round, marking one of the most thrilling finishes the competition has witnessed since its inception in 1985.

The financial stakes were high for all participants. The 2026 prize pool totaled $2.5 million, with $1 million awarded to the winner, $500,000 for the runner-up, and $150,000 for each first-round participant who did not advance, plus a separate $100,000 bonus for the longest home run of the night.

Netflix also assembled a broadcast team designed to combine baseball expertise with entertainment flair. Matt Vasgersian provided play-by-play commentary, joined in the booth by CC Sabathia, Hunter Pence, and Anthony Rizzo, who also explained the new swing-based rules. Elle Duncan anchored a separate studio set alongside Barry Bonds and Albert Pujols. Duncan, who transitioned from ESPN to Netflix earlier this year, shared with reporters prior to the broadcast that she would be on the field with the players, hearing their insights about the Derby and their experiences.

With Schwarber and Harper both falling short in front of their home crowd and Jordan Walker taking home the crown instead, do you think MLB made the right decision by moving this event to Netflix, or would you prefer to see the Derby return to ESPN next year?
