Ruling a kingdom is often portrayed as glamorous, but ‘House of the Dragon‘ effectively illustrates the stark reality of this burden. After a series of intense battles, the Targaryen civil war has reached a temporary standstill, leaving Rhaenyra to navigate a throne she was not fully prepared for.

Season 3 has significantly altered the dynamics of power. The premiere featured the brutal Battle of the Gullet, while the second episode showcased Rhaenyra and Daemon’s successful takeover of the Red Keep and King’s Landing, aided by the Dragonseeds, as part of a covert plan initiated by Alicent.

Episode 3, titled ‘Rhaenyra Triumphant,’ begins with Daemon and the Dragonseeds approaching Lord Ormund Hightower on the battlefield. With Otto Hightower deceased and the war seemingly concluded, Daemon informs Ormund that Rhaenyra now occupies the throne and offers him and his men safe passage home if he agrees to bend the knee.

Ormund hesitantly consents, but with a stipulation. Daemon insists that Ormund surrender his ward, Daeron Targaryen, Alicent’s youngest son and a legitimate heir, along with the boy’s dragon, Tessarion. Ormund reluctantly hands over a nervous, bleach-blond teenager, and they return to King’s Landing, believing the situation resolved.

Meanwhile, Rhaenyra is learning that winning a crown and ruling effectively are two very different challenges. The treasury is depleted, the city is suffering from starvation due to a wartime blockade, and the Red Keep is plagued by a rat infestation. Additionally, the High Septon refuses to formally recognize her as queen without proof of Aegon II’s death.

Despite these obstacles, Rhaenyra attempts to make progress. She invites the wealthiest families of the city to the castle, allowing the Goldcloaks to seize their hoarded food supplies, a strategy that proves effective despite a tense encounter with the arrogant Lord Torrhen Manderly. She also declines Corlys Velaryon’s request to legitimize his sons Alyn and Addam, a choice that strains her relationship with one of her most loyal supporters.

In a gesture of goodwill towards Alicent following Otto’s execution, Rhaenyra opts to spare Daeron’s life instead of executing him in place of his brother. She plans to send him to the Wall, arranging for Alicent to see her son one last time before his departure.

However, the reunion delivers a shocking twist. When Alicent sees the boy, it becomes evident that he is not Daeron. The imposter reveals that Ormund forced him to bleach his hair and impersonate the prince, threatening harm to the boy’s real mother if he revealed the truth. The actual Daeron and his dragon Tessarion were never surrendered.

This betrayal coincides with more bad news. A soot-covered survivor arrives at the Red Keep with reports that Ormund’s army has not returned to Oldtown as promised. Instead, they have taken control of Tumbleton, holding its inhabitants hostage, with Tessarion now back in Hightower’s possession.

Enraged, Rhaenyra initially considers annihilating Ormund’s forces, but a dragonkeeper reminds her that such an act would also endanger innocent townsfolk. Standing before a bonfire of captured Hightower banners, she opts for a more calculated, albeit ominous, response. “My arm is long. He cannot win,” she asserts, though the truth of that statement remains uncertain.

The episode concludes with the realization that the fragile peace achieved through Ormund’s false surrender was always precarious, and Tumbleton may soon become the setting for the season’s next significant conflict. This final image encapsulates an hour focused on the disparity between claiming power and the reality of maintaining it.

As the season commenced with dragons soaring over the Gullet, this episode shifted from spectacle to a more subdued yet unsettling narrative, showcasing a new queen grappling with her limited control.
