Ormund Hightower has emerged as a key player in ‘House of the Dragon‘ Season 3, with his unexpected move to seize the market town of Tumbleton leaving fans curious about his true intentions. Instead of retreating to Oldtown after his encounter with Daemon Targaryen, Ormund directed his forces into Tumbleton, a decision that is now altering the course of the ongoing war.

At first glance, this strategy seems puzzling since Tumbleton lacks significant strategic value. However, Ormund is not engaged in a traditional war; he is waging a psychological battle, and Rhaenyra Targaryen is beginning to catch on.

In the previous episode, Ormund appeared to surrender the real Daeron Targaryen to Daemon, only for the twist to reveal he had substituted a decoy while keeping the true prince as his squire. With that deception in place, Ormund led his forces into Tumbleton, a prosperous market town loyal to Rhaenyra, rather than returning home as anticipated.

Once inside, Ormund’s troops were stationed directly in the homes of Tumbleton’s residents, with three men assigned to each household, as reported by Comic Book Club. This tactic is intentional.

By embedding his army within civilian homes rather than camping outside, Ormund makes it nearly impossible for Rhaenyra’s dragons to attack without risking the lives of the very people who support her.

Forbes noted that this setup allows Ormund to occupy the city in a way that prevents Rhaenyra from simply incinerating his forces without causing mass casualties among innocents. This ruthless military strategy masquerades as a standard occupation, placing Rhaenyra in a difficult position from the moment she learns of his actions.

As highlighted by Comic Book Club, Rhaenyra eventually grasps Ormund’s strategy. She realizes he aims to compel her into unleashing fire on a town that has raised her own banner, which would tarnish her reputation and liken her to Maegor the Cruel. This trap is designed to exploit her public image rather than her military strength.

Ormund is wagering that Rhaenyra cannot emerge victorious regardless of her choice. If she attacks Tumbleton with her dragons, she kills her own supporters and hands the Greens a propaganda win. Conversely, if she does nothing, the Hightowers can comfortably occupy the town and bolster their forces.

Rolling Stone Philippines pointed out that Rhaenyra herself notes Tumbleton is merely a market town, not a true stronghold, emphasizing how provocatively Ormund’s choice was made.

Additionally, there is a personal element drawing Rhaenyra’s allies toward Tumbleton. Hugh Hammer’s wife, Kat, resides there with her brother, providing one of Rhaenyra’s dragonriders with a direct incentive to act, as reported by Comic Book.com. Ormund may be unaware that he has inadvertently created a personal conflict amidst his occupation, which could complicate his entire strategy.

Some of the episode’s most unsettling moments arise from Ormund’s behavior once he settles into Tumbleton. Forbes described him as spending much of the episode relaxing in a bathtub he had installed in a local lord’s home, calmly listening to complaints from nobles about the occupation while making it clear his generosity has limits.

That thin facade of benevolence quickly crumbles. When a Hightower soldier assaults a local woman, Ormund punishes the attacker publicly. However, when Kat’s brother retaliates against the soldiers occupying his home, Ormund forces Daeron to execute the man himself as a demonstration of Hightower authority, according to Forbes.

The episode reveals that Ormund’s ambitions extend far beyond merely holding territory for Aegon or Aemond. Rolling Stone Philippines reported that Ormund tells Daeron he believes he should be crowned king instead of his brothers, framing it as a return to a ruler raised under the Faith of the Seven rather than one shaped by Targaryen dragon worship. Daeron, horrified by the suggestion of betraying his own brothers, is left stunned.

Confronted with a dilemma that offers no straightforward solution, Rhaenyra turns to her dwindling Small Council for advice. According to Comic Book Club, Maester Orwyle suggests redirecting soldiers originally intended for King’s Landing toward Tumbleton, while Mysaria supports the plan, acknowledging it will involve bloodshed but framing it as more merciful than dragonfire. Rhaenyra ultimately decides to retake the town house by house rather than deliver the overwhelming show of force Ormund seems to anticipate.

Meanwhile, Ormund is not simply waiting for Rhaenyra to act. He is counting on reinforcements from Aemond and the dragon Vhagar to provide air support at Tumbleton, according to Forbes. However, Aemond appears to have disappeared from Harrenhal entirely, leaving Ormund’s entire strategy reliant on a dragon that may never arrive.

‘House of the Dragon’ has clearly set the stage for the First Battle of Tumbleton, with both sides now committed to a conflict neither can fully control. With Ormund’s temper fraying and Rhaenyra forced into a house-by-house campaign she never intended, Tumbleton is shaping up to be less of a prize and more of a trap that could determine the outcome of the war.

What do you think Ormund’s true endgame is now that his plan to crown Daeron is out in the open? Can Rhaenyra retake Tumbleton without sacrificing the moral high ground he is trying to bait her into relinquishing?
