HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 is experiencing one of its best critical receptions yet, but a significant divide has emerged between critics and audiences.

The latest season is outperforming previous installments, achieving a “Certified Fresh” score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Critics have lauded the direction, new characters, and larger battles. The official critical consensus on the platform describes the season as a compelling continuation of the Westeros saga, labeling it “a reinvigorated and riveting third season… crafting a punchy prequel that matches the expectations of its predecessor.”

However, audience reactions are not aligning with the critical acclaim. The audience score has dipped to approximately 69%, highlighting a noticeable gap between critics and viewers. This discrepancy has sparked discussions online, with early indications of review-bombing impacting the show’s ratings.

Review-bombing is when groups of viewers leave a large volume of negative ratings in a short time frame, typically aimed at lowering the audience score, even when critics are more favorable. According to a report from Collider, similar situations have arisen with other HBO projects, including Season 2 of ‘The Last of Us,’ where actor Bella Ramsey faced targeted backlash from certain viewers.

Some user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are notably harsh. One viewer commented, “HBO desperately needs to clean house on the creative involved with this project,” while unfavorably comparing the show to another upcoming ‘Game of Thrones’ spin-off, ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.’ Another user stated, “Awful show. Acting is appalling, the writing is terrible,” reflecting a strong rejection of the new season. A third review went further, claiming the show “disrespects” George R.R. Martin, the original creator of the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe.

Despite this backlash from some viewers, critics maintain a different perspective. One positive review emphasized the season’s impact, calling it “game-changing,” illustrating the clear divide in reception.

‘House of the Dragon’ is created by Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin, continuing to expand the universe first introduced in ‘Game of Thrones.’ The series features Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, and a mix of returning and new cast members.

The show has also performed well on streaming platforms. According to FlixPatrol data, the Season 3 premiere quickly ascended to the top of global HBO Max viewership charts following its release. This indicates that while online audience scores are polarized, interest in the series remains robust.

As the season progresses, it remains uncertain whether the audience score will stabilize or continue to decline. For now, ‘House of the Dragon’ finds itself in a unique situation where critical acclaim and audience feedback are pulling in vastly different directions, making it one of the most discussed shows currently airing.
