‘House of the Dragon’ made a thrilling return with one of its most intense episodes yet, showcasing the long-awaited Battle of the Gullet. The Season 3 premiere featured a massive sea battle, fierce dragon fights, and a heartbreaking loss that significantly altered the course of the Targaryen war.

This episode adapted a pivotal moment from George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire & Blood’, with extensive planning dedicated to bringing the battle to life. In an interview with TV Insider, the cast members of ‘House of the Dragon’ shared insights into the emotional weight of the episode and the choices that led to its devastating conclusion.

The battle kicks off as Rhaenyra Targaryen, portrayed by Emma D’Arcy, continues her blockade of King’s Landing with the formidable fleet of House Velaryon. This strategic move puts immense pressure on the Greens by restricting their supplies and trade, compelling them to devise a way to break through.

In response, the Green Council forms an alliance with Sharako Lohar, the ruler of the Triarchy, played by Abigail Thorn. Their objective is to dismantle the blockade and restore the crucial trade route. However, when Lohar confronts Corlys Velaryon, portrayed by Steve Toussaint, personal vendetta takes precedence over their original plan.

The battle quickly spirals into chaos as ships collide on the water and dragons clash in the skies. Jace Velaryon, played by Harry Collett, joins the fray after making a significant decision regarding his mother.

Before the battle commences, Jace instructs Rhaenyra’s guards to confine her, preventing her from participating in the fight. Collett explained to TV Insider that Jace believed safeguarding his mother was more crucial than his own safety.

He felt Rhaenyra’s life was far too precious to jeopardize, willing to make the ultimate sacrifice instead. However, Emma D’Arcy offered a contrasting view on Jace’s decision, labeling it a mistake stemming from his youthful inexperience.

“Rebellion is the occupation of teenagers,” D’Arcy stated, emphasizing that Jace’s actions were driven by naivety. She also described locking Rhaenyra away as an “insane act of infantilization.”

This decision becomes even more tragic when Jace’s fate is revealed. During the battle, he and Baela Targaryen, played by Bethany Antonia, take to the skies with their dragons. Jace rides Vermax while engaging in combat against enemy forces, but the battle concludes in tragedy.

In ‘Fire & Blood’, Jace’s death unfolds differently, but the series has crafted its own interpretation of the event. The young heir finds himself in peril amid the turmoil and ultimately meets his demise, leaving Rhaenyra and the rest of the Blacks grappling with yet another devastating loss.

The premiere also delved into a troubling moment between Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke, and her son Aemond, portrayed by Ewan Mitchell. Alicent begins plotting to bring Rhaenyra back to King’s Landing and sends Aemond to Harrenhal as part of her scheme.

However, the situation takes an unsettling turn when Aemond expresses romantic feelings toward his mother. Cooke revealed to TV Insider that Alicent is aware of her son’s dark tendencies but never anticipated him crossing that boundary.

“Why the f**k would she?” Cooke remarked, reflecting Alicent’s shock.

With Jace’s death and Corlys Velaryon’s fate hanging in the balance, the Season 3 premiere paves the way for an even darker chapter in the Targaryen civil war. The Battle of the Gullet marks just the beginning, and the repercussions are sure to influence every subsequent decision.
