How Alan Ritchson Trained for ‘Reacher’ Season 4 with Lighter Weights and Higher Volume
Alan Ritchson has dedicated over three years to transforming himself into one of television’s most physically commanding leading men, making his evolution a significant topic alongside ‘Reacher’. Since the series debuted in February 2022, the actor has continually sought new ways to enhance his already impressive physique with each season.
This commitment first gained attention ahead of Season 1, when Ritchson added approximately 12 kilograms of muscle in just eight months to authentically portray Lee Child’s towering former military investigator. Standing at 191 centimeters and initially weighing around 104 kilograms, Ritchson was already a formidable figure, but achieving Jack Reacher’s book-accurate stature demanded an extraordinary level of dedication.
As ‘Reacher’ Season 4 launched on Prime Video, Ritchson disclosed that his training regimen has significantly evolved since that initial transformation. Instead of focusing solely on heavier lifts, the 43-year-old actor has shifted his workouts to emphasize lighter weights combined with much higher volume, prioritizing sustainability over sheer strength gains.
During the filming of the new season, Ritchson showcased a workout consisting of a giant set that totaled up to 240 reps, utilizing just one barbell and three compound exercises instead of a full gym setup. This method aligns with what fitness experts refer to as hypertrophy-focused training, where higher rep ranges, typically between 15 and 25 reps per set, are more effective for muscle growth than traditional low-rep, heavy-weight strength training.
Ritchson has been open about the reasons behind his changing training priorities. In an interview with Men’s Health UK, he explained that his approach is a long-term strategy, expressing his desire to continue portraying Reacher for 15 years without the need for surgery after each season.
This focus on longevity has also led Ritchson to advocate for medically supervised testosterone replacement therapy, particularly for men in their 40s and older. He emphasizes that hormone therapy should always be assessed by a qualified medical professional rather than pursued independently.
A key aspect of Ritchson’s current approach is that he no longer allows his body to shrink dramatically between seasons. In April, he displayed his physique during the off-season, noting he remains only a few pounds lighter than his typical filming weight. He frames his fitness as a year-round lifestyle rather than a role-specific transformation that he must repeat from scratch each time.

Fan reactions to Ritchson’s ongoing physical transformation have been overwhelmingly positive. When the Season 4 trailer was released, Reddit’s r/reacher community buzzed with excitement, with one thread amassing over 1,300 upvotes in just two days, including humorous remarks that by Season 5, Ritchson might dominate the entire screen.
With Season 4 now in progress, releasing its first three episodes on August 12 and continuing weekly until the September 16 finale, and with Season 5 already confirmed by Prime Video even before the current season premiered, Ritchson’s training philosophy indicates that audiences can expect his formidable on-screen presence to remain a hallmark of the franchise for years to come.
For a role centered on physical intimidation, Ritchson’s transition to lighter weights and higher volume appears to be less about scaling back and more about playing the long game.
