Mindy Kaling has established a remarkable career in modern television comedy, seamlessly transitioning between roles as a showrunner, executive producer, and voice actor across various networks and streaming platforms. This impressive track record has positioned her as one of the industry’s most active creators, despite her shows often facing challenges in securing long-term runs.

Her latest project, ‘Not Suitable for Work’, debuted on Hulu in June, marking Kaling’s first sole creator credit since ‘The Mindy Project’. The series follows a group of ambitious 20-somethings as they navigate the pressures of their careers and personal lives in Manhattan’s Murray Hill neighborhood.

Unfortunately, that initial optimism has come to an abrupt halt. Hulu has officially canceled ‘Not Suitable for Work’ after just one nine-episode season, as reported by Variety. Warner Bros. Television, the studio behind the show, is now looking to pitch the comedy to other potential networks or streaming services in hopes of finding it a new home.

This cancellation comes just two months after the show concluded its first season, despite Kaling expressing genuine hope for a second season shortly before the announcement. In an interview with Deadline around the finale, Kaling mentioned that her writers’ room was already preparing for Season 2, sharing her excitement about the cast and writing team’s dedication to the show.

The reception for ‘Not Suitable for Work’ presented two contrasting narratives. While the series garnered a modest 54 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, audience feedback was significantly more positive, with an 82 percent approval rating. This disparity suggests that the show cultivated a loyal fanbase, even as critics remained skeptical.

The ensemble cast featured Ella Hunt as AJ, an investment banker who moves to New York, alongside Avantika as her best friend Abby, an aspiring celebrity stylist. The core group also included Will Angus, Jack Martin, Nicholas Duvernay, and Jay Ellis, with notable guest stars like Victor Garber, Constance Wu, Ego Nwodim, and Greg Germann.

This situation is not unfamiliar for Kaling, who has faced similar cancellations in the past. HBO Max canceled ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls’ after three seasons in March 2025, the animated series ‘Velma’ ended after two seasons in 2024, and her NBC comedy ‘Champions’ was cut short after just one season in 2018. Even ‘The Mindy Project’ was initially canceled by Fox in 2015 before Hulu revived it for three additional seasons, ultimately leading to a six-season run.

This history provides a glimmer of hope for ‘Not Suitable for Work’. With Warner Bros. Television retaining the rights and expressing interest in shopping the series to other platforms, there remains a chance that another streamer could step in, similar to how Hulu once did for ‘The Mindy Project’, although the show’s mixed critical reception adds an element of uncertainty.

For now, all nine episodes of ‘Not Suitable for Work’ are still available for streaming on Hulu, leaving fans of AJ, Abby, and the rest of the Murray Hill crew in suspense as they await news on whether the series will find a new home.
