Hulu is set to delve into one of Florida’s most infamous murder cases with its new four-part true-crime docuseries.

‘Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel’ will explore the 2014 murder of Markel, a Florida attorney and law professor, whose death was later revealed to be part of a murder-for-hire scheme. The series is scheduled to premiere on September 1 and will include fresh interviews, previously unheard audio, and insights from individuals involved in the investigation.

As reported by Deadline, the series will examine the intricate family dynamics surrounding Markel’s murder and the custody battle that ensued following his divorce from Wendi Adelson. Markel was shot and killed in his Tallahassee home in July 2014, and prosecutors later contended that the murder was linked to the custody dispute over his children.

The case has garnered significant attention due to the involvement of several members of the Adelson family in the investigation and subsequent trials.

Five individuals have been convicted in connection with Markel’s murder: Donna Adelson, Wendi Adelson’s mother; Charlie Adelson, Wendi’s brother; Sigfredo Garcia; Katherine Magbanua; and Luis Rivera.

Wendi Adelson has not faced charges in the case. Prosecutors have labeled her as an “unindicted co-conspirator,” although she has denied any involvement in the murder.

The upcoming Hulu series aims to revisit these complex relationships while also shedding light on how investigators pieced together the case.

One of the standout interviews features Rob Adelson, the eldest son of the Adelson family. Estranged from his family for years, Rob testified against his mother, Donna, during her trial. In a recorded conversation with FBI agent Pat Sanford, he discusses his family and his role in the prosecution.

Sanford is also featured in the series, having dedicated much of his career to investigating Markel’s death. He will provide insights in what is described as a first-time interview for the documentary.

Another new interview includes June Umchina, who was previously involved with Charlie Adelson. She is expected to share details about their relationship and what Charlie allegedly revealed to her regarding Markel’s murder.

Directed by Sebastain Smith and produced by Lily Fletcher, the series is backed by executive producers Dov Freedman and Charlie Russell from Curious Films, along with David Sloan and Claire Weinraub from ABC News Studios.

Curious Films is producing the project for ABC News Studios, having previously worked on several notable documentary projects, including Sky’s ‘Boyzone: No Matter What’, Disney+’s ‘Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth’, and Netflix titles such as ‘A Toxic Love Story’, ‘Lover, Stalker, Killer’, and ‘The Man with 1000 Kids’.

With new interviews and access to individuals directly involved in the investigation, ‘Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel’ promises to provide viewers with a fresh perspective on a case that has captivated public interest for over a decade.

The four-part series premieres on September 1 on Hulu.
