IMAX Corporation is reportedly exploring the possibility of a sale and has begun reaching out to entertainment companies that might be interested in acquiring it, according to sources familiar with the situation and reporting from The Wall Street Journal.

This process is still in its early stages, and the same sources indicate that there is no certainty a deal will materialize, with developments likely as discussions progress.

IMAX is renowned for its large-format movie screens and premium theater experiences. The company has become a significant player in the modern cinema landscape, particularly as audiences increasingly seek higher-quality viewing options.

The interest in a potential sale arises at a time when premium cinema formats are expanding faster than the overall box office. Recent statistics reveal that U.S. and Canadian box office sales have reached approximately $2.9 billion this year, marking the strongest performance since before the pandemic, according to Box Office Mojo.

Premium screens like IMAX have also been capturing a larger share of ticket sales. According to EntTelligence, IMAX and similar formats accounted for around 16% of ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada in early April, up from about 13% in 2021.

IMAX itself has reported growth in its share of the box office, stating it represented about 5.2% of domestic box office revenue last year, compared to 3.2% in 2019. Major blockbuster films such as ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ and ‘Project Hail Mary’ have significantly contributed to this growth, particularly as they were crafted for large-format viewing.

During an investor meeting in December, IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond discussed the company’s future and its role within the broader entertainment sector. He remarked, “an incredibly valuable player, either as a wholly differentiated publicly traded company or as part of a larger company.” He has also recently returned to work part-time following a medical leave due to pneumonia.

Currently, IMAX’s market value stands at approximately $1.85 billion, making it relatively affordable for larger entertainment companies or media groups, which could be a factor in attracting interest if a sale proceeds.

Following the report from The Wall Street Journal, IMAX shares surged by over 10% in after-hours trading, indicating that investors responded swiftly to the news.

A crucial consideration surrounding any potential deal is how a new owner would manage film distribution. IMAX collaborates with numerous Hollywood studios, and its screens are utilized by various companies vying for premium release slots. If a studio were to own IMAX, it could raise concerns about whether it would prioritize its own films.

The industry is also evolving as streaming companies increasingly experiment with theatrical releases. Netflix has recently begun releasing select films in IMAX before streaming, including a Brad Pitt project directed by David Fincher. It also plans to debut the high-budget adaptation ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’ in IMAX theaters prior to its streaming release.

For now, the potential sale of IMAX remains uncertain. However, the initial discussions indicate that major players in entertainment recognize the value of premium cinema experiences as the movie industry continues to evolve.
