Inde Navarrette Prepares Intensively for Her Role as Rogue in ‘X-Men’
For years, fans have eagerly anticipated the proper integration of mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The possibility of the ‘X-Men‘ joining the MCU emerged following Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s film studio in 2019, but the actual lineup has only recently begun to take shape.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige unveiled the first members of the mutant team at D23, featuring Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Maya Boyd as Storm, with Adam Driver portraying the villainous Mister Sinister. Completing this ensemble is ‘Obsession’ breakout Inde Navarrette, who will take on the role of Rogue.
Now, the actress is sharing how seriously she is approaching the character. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Navarrette revealed that she has been studying Rogue extensively for herself, for director Jake Schreier, and for her own expectations as a fan. Her dedication is clear: “I’m doing everything, exclamation point.”
This level of commitment aligns with the narrative of her recent months. The same Los Angeles Times profile highlights her breakout year and the origin of her name, which is a childhood nickname from her grandfather and mother that signifies independence. Rogue represents a significant new chapter in her journey.
This isn’t the first time Navarrette has hinted at her Marvel involvement. Prior to her casting being confirmed, she disclosed on Variety’s ‘Up Next’ podcast that she had met with Schreier and teased her admiration for Mystique. Ultimately, Rogue became the character Marvel envisioned for her.
The timing of her casting is noteworthy, especially considering her successful year. ‘Obsession’ has amassed $500 million globally, and her portrayal of Nikki has already garnered her a Critics’ Choice Award, followed by the Breakthrough Actress Award for film. Few actors enter a franchise role with such impressive momentum.
Her dedication to capturing Rogue’s voice reflects the same level of commitment. She shared with Entertainment Tonight that she plans to draw inspiration from the Southern women she remembers from Corpus Christi, Texas, where she spent much of her life, and she also intends to visit Mississippi to perfect the accent. Given that Rogue hails from Mississippi, this detail is crucial for fans.
Expectations are high, as Rogue already boasts a dedicated fanbase. Lenore Zann, who voices Rogue in ‘X-Men ’97,’ congratulated Navarrette in an Instagram video following the D23 announcement. The last live-action portrayal of Rogue that fans experienced was Anna Paquin’s interpretation in Fox’s ‘X-Men’ films.
However, not everyone has welcomed the casting with enthusiasm. Her selection has sparked debate among fans, particularly regarding her recognition from ‘Obsession,’ and Cailee Spaeny had been a favored fan-cast choice prior to the announcement. Some fans have also expressed skepticism about her ability to deliver a Southern accent, despite the fact that many consider the quintessential Rogue to be Australian by birth. Navarrette’s all-in attitude appears to be the best response to those concerns.
There remains ample time for her to demonstrate her capabilities. The ‘X-Men’ film is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2028. Before that, she will host the Halloween episode of ‘Saturday Night Live’ on October 31.
Meanwhile, the larger mutant narrative continues to unfold. Most of the original ‘X-Men’ cast members are set to reprise their roles in this year’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ where they will join forces with MCU stars to confront Doctor Doom. If Navarrette’s preparation is any indication, the new generation will be ready when their moment arrives.
