Beau DeMayo was once regarded as one of Marvel’s most promising new talents. As the creator and showrunner of ‘X-Men ’97’, he played a pivotal role in reviving one of the company’s most cherished animated series, achieving significant success for Disney+.

However, his tenure at Marvel ended in controversy, culminating in a public dispute with the studio, legal actions, and lingering questions about the circumstances surrounding DeMayo’s departure.

According to Vanity Fair, DeMayo dedicated three years to ‘X-Men ’97’, from 2021 to 2024. The series, a revival of the iconic 1990s X-Men animated show, featured beloved characters like Wolverine, Storm, Jean Grey, Magneto, and Professor X. It quickly became a hit for Disney+, garnering strong reviews and millions of viewers upon its release.

The first season boasted a 99% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and received acclaim from fans and industry professionals alike. Even before the show’s debut, DeMayo had completed scripts for a second season, positioning him as one of Marvel’s rising creative stars.

However, just days prior to the premiere of ‘X-Men ’97’, DeMayo received an unexpected call from Disney’s human resources department, informing him of his immediate termination following an internal investigation.

Marvel later issued a statement saying, “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately and he has no further affiliation with Marvel.”

Months later, Variety reported that sources familiar with the situation indicated the investigation involved allegations of sexual misconduct. Marvel did not elaborate on the allegations, while DeMayo denied the claims, asserting they were false.

In a video statement shared online in September 2024, DeMayo stated, “The rumors being spread around me online are lies, and they are offensive.” He also accused Marvel of fostering a toxic workplace and claimed the company aimed to tarnish his reputation. Marvel has not publicly addressed these specific allegations.

In an interview with Vanity Fair after his exit, DeMayo described himself as someone who fought diligently to make ‘X-Men ’97’ a success while navigating challenging working conditions. He expressed concern that his identity as a queer Black man may have influenced his treatment at Marvel.

DeMayo recounted instances where he felt disrespected as a leader, citing comments suggesting he did not fit the mold of a traditional showrunner. He believed there was a perception that he was hired solely due to diversity initiatives.

Despite the turmoil, ‘X-Men ’97’ achieved remarkable success. Marvel proceeded with a second season, though reports indicated that some of DeMayo’s original scripts were altered following his departure. Jake Castorena stepped in as supervising producer, and Matthew Chauncey was later appointed as head writer for the third season.

The controversy also drew attention to DeMayo’s online presence. During his time at Marvel, he was known for sharing fitness photos and posts about comics, superheroes, and his personal life. After leaving the studio, his online activity became more public, including adult content on OnlyFans.

DeMayo informed Vanity Fair that he had been transparent with Marvel regarding his personal social media activity, believing it was separate from his professional responsibilities. He mentioned that the account began as a platform to share fitness content and to build confidence after struggling with body image issues.

“When I was growing up, I had such a massive shame about my body and physical appearance, both racially and sexually. The more I confronted that, the more proud I became,” DeMayo shared with the magazine.

His choice to become an adult content creator sparked further discussion. While some supporters backed his right to express himself, others questioned the potential impact on his career. Vanity Fair spoke with acquaintances of DeMayo, revealing mixed reactions to his online decisions.

For DeMayo, comic books have always held significant importance in his life. He has shared how superhero narratives helped him navigate feelings of being different during his upbringing. Adopted by white parents, he noted that comics aided him in understanding concepts of identity and belonging.

Prior to his work on ‘X-Men ’97’, DeMayo contributed to several major projects, including ‘The Originals’, ‘The Witcher’, and Marvel’s ‘Moon Knight’. He described joining Marvel as a dream opportunity and expressed excitement about telling a new X-Men story.

He also played a role in developing the screenplay for the ‘Blade’ reboot before his exit from Marvel. According to DeMayo’s lawsuit, he faced discrimination and unsafe working conditions during his tenure with the company. Marvel has not confirmed these allegations.

DeMayo subsequently filed a lawsuit against Marvel, seeking legal relief over a non-disparagement agreement he signed upon leaving the studio. As reported by Vanity Fair, the case remains active and is anticipated to go to trial in 2027.

Since the onset of the controversy, DeMayo has reduced his online presence. His social media accounts now focus more on comics, fitness, and personal interests rather than his conflict with Marvel. While his future projects remain uncertain, his contributions to ‘X-Men ’97’ have undeniably left a significant impact on the franchise.

The saga of Beau DeMayo and Marvel remains unresolved, with both parties presenting starkly different narratives regarding the events. What is evident is that ‘X-Men ’97’ has become a significant success, while the conflict surrounding its creator has emerged as one of Marvel’s most discussed behind-the-scenes controversies.
