James Bond Casting Reaches Its Final Test: Jack Lowden, Callum Turner and Josh O’Connor Reportedly Testing to Replace Daniel Craig
The search for the next James Bond has generated significant buzz in Hollywood. Following Daniel Craig’s departure after ‘No Time to Die’ in 2021, nearly every British, Irish, and Australian actor of suitable age has been considered for the iconic role.
This speculation has evolved into a concrete process. In February 2025, Amazon MGM Studios took creative control of the franchise, enlisting producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, and hiring Denis Villeneuve to direct a new film with a screenplay by Steven Knight. Casting director Nina Gold is leading the search.
It seems the search is nearing its conclusion. As reported by Deadline, the studio is preparing for final screen tests next week, with at least four test offers already extended. While not officially confirmed, Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, and Josh O’Connor are among the actors expected to audition.
The selection process has been thorough. After two months of discussions, the first round of auditions occurred in August, leading to a narrowed-down list of candidates. The tests, initially scheduled for earlier this month, could commence as soon as Friday.
Despite the tests concluding next week, a timeline for a final decision remains unclear. Many anticipate an announcement by the end of the year, with producers hinting that news could surface before 2026 concludes.
Each candidate brings unique qualities to the table. Lowden, known for his role in ‘Slow Horses’, has gained traction since August when author Richard Osman mentioned him as a strong contender, with co-star Gary Oldman also endorsing him. Turner, a favorite in tabloids, boasts credits like ‘Masters of the Air’ and ‘Eternity’, and is engaged to pop star Dua Lipa. O’Connor, recognized for ‘Challengers’ and ‘Wake Up Dead Man’, has surprised many with his inclusion.
The identity of the fourth finalist remains undisclosed, adding to the intrigue. Earlier reports had suggested other names, including Jacob Elordi and Jack O’Connell, indicating that the list has evolved over time. It’s important to note that casting reports for Bond have historically been unreliable until a script is finalized and tests are completed.
Reports indicate that Villeneuve is seeking a fresh face, with the studio leaning towards a younger actor in his late 20s or early 30s, who could hold the role for several years. Both Lowden and Turner, at 36, fit within the discussed age range, although the exact criteria have not been confirmed.
Amazon has remained tight-lipped throughout the process. Initially, the studio stated that the search had just begun and has refrained from commenting on specific details. Pascal has suggested that the next Bond should bring something new and exciting while guiding the franchise into a new era.
Online prediction markets have turned the speculation into a daily activity. Recent reports show Lowden and Turner neck and neck, with the option of no Bond being chosen also garnering interest. These numbers fluctuate rapidly with each new update, so they should be seen as mere chatter rather than solid evidence.
What is evident is the immense public interest. The latest report attracted hundreds of thousands of views within hours, highlighting how closely fans are monitoring the situation.
Once the tests are finalized, the studio will evaluate the results against the film’s vision. Production is anticipated to begin in 2027, aiming for a release in November 2028, allowing time before filming starts.
For now, the franchise remains in a state of anticipation, but with a clearer understanding of who might don the tuxedo next.
