Casting speculation has become a significant aspect of superhero fandom, with dedicated trackers compiling every rumor, leak, and confirmed announcement into extensive master lists. Recently, this meticulous cataloging faced a challenge when the individual actually overseeing the project decided to weigh in.

‘Man of Tomorrow,’ James Gunn’s sequel to 2025’s ‘Superman,’ has been steadily assembling one of the most impressive ensembles in recent DC history. With a mix of returning favorites and new additions, keeping track of who’s confirmed for the film has turned into a full-time job for fans and media alike.

This effort recently culminated in a detailed cast breakdown from Screen Rant, listing every DC character reportedly confirmed for the sequel so far. Gunn himself responded to that list, indicating that perhaps only half of those names had been officially confirmed.

This type of clarification aligns with a pattern Gunn has established during ‘Man of Tomorrow’s’ development, where he has consistently stepped in to clarify or debunk casting reports circulating online. Just months ago, he publicly challenged a Deadline report claiming multiple actresses had auditioned for the villainous role of Maxima, labeling the story as “shoddy and incorrect” and expressing frustration that the outlet hadn’t verified details before publishing.

Despite this pushback, much of the casting news for the film has come directly from Gunn, providing fans with a genuinely confirmed core to rely on. David Corenswet returns as Clark Kent, joined by Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor, with the two characters reportedly forming an uneasy alliance to confront a much larger threat.

That threat manifests in the form of Brainiac, portrayed by Lars Eidinger, whose casting Gunn confirmed late last year as one of the film’s central villains. Rachel Brosnahan also returns as Lois Lane, alongside Skyler Gisondo reprising his breakout role as Jimmy Olsen from the first film.

The ensemble extends well beyond Superman’s immediate circle. Aaron Pierre is set to return as John Stewart’s Green Lantern, María Gabriela de Faría is back as The Engineer despite the stalled status of her planned spinoff film, and Sara Sampaio returns as Eve Teschmacher, whose surprising heroics in the first film may have earned her a more significant role this time around.

In addition to these confirmed returnees, several new names have joined the project in roles that remain intentionally undisclosed. Matthew Lillard, reuniting with Gunn for the first time since their Scooby-Doo collaborations, and Sinqua Walls have both been added to the cast without any official word on their specific roles.

Gunn has also directly addressed some of the more persistent rumors surrounding the project, firmly denying reports that Wonder Woman or Batman had any involvement in the film’s casting process. He has been intentionally vague about whether Maxima, the fiery warrior queen of Almerac, will ultimately appear, despite reports that Adria Arjona auditioned for the role.

With filming having commenced in April and a July 9, 2027 release date confirmed, ‘Man of Tomorrow’ still has many casting reveals left to make official. Given Gunn’s frequent corrections to the record thus far, fans may want to approach every unofficial cast list, no matter how comprehensive, with a healthy dose of skepticism until he provides further clarification.
