James Gunn Confirms DCU Batman Suit Is Not Designed Yet
James Gunn is known for engaging with fans, and his recent responses have sparked excitement among the DCU community. As the universe continues to evolve, every casual remark from the DC Studios co-head feels like a significant update. His latest insights are no exception.
The DC Universe has been growing since the release of ‘Superman’, with new additions like the animated ‘Creature Commandos’ and the second season of ‘Peacemaker’ on HBO Max. Following the arrival of ‘Supergirl’ in June, ‘Clayface’ is set to hit theaters this week, marking the last DC film until ‘Man of Tomorrow’ next July. Fans are eager for any news about upcoming projects.
On Monday night, Gunn took to Threads to answer a series of fan questions. One fan managed to cram in multiple inquiries, and Gunn humorously acknowledged the overload before addressing them all. Here’s what he disclosed.
When asked about the texture of the DCU Batman suit compared to David Corenswet’s Superman suit, Gunn revealed that the suit has yet to be designed. This is a noteworthy admission regarding ‘The Brave and the Bold’, the film that will introduce the DCU’s version of Batman.
Gunn previously described the film as focusing on Batman and his son Damian Wayne, marking the beginning of the Bat-Family within the DCU. Andy Muschietti is set to direct from a script by Christina Hodson, but there is still no release date in sight. Casting is expected to commence only after a screenplay is finalized, which explains the absence of a suit at this early stage of development.

When questioned about Wally West’s status in the DCU, Gunn’s response was vague, leaving fans wondering if the speedster will make an appearance anytime soon. This suggests that the studio is still determining where The Flash fits into the broader narrative.
Another question revolved around the 2023 film ‘Blue Beetle’, specifically whether Ted Kord was friends with Jaime Reyes before his disappearance. Gunn clarified that while Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes is indeed part of the canon, the studio has not officially confirmed the movie as canon.
This aligns with Gunn’s previous statements, where he confirmed that Maridueña would reprise his role in the DCU, alongside Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and John Cena as Peacemaker. There are also reports suggesting that DC Studios is working on an animated sequel series for ‘Blue Beetle’ on HBO Max, which may delve into the post-credits scene hinting that Ted Kord is still alive.
When asked if he would write and direct the ‘Teen Titans’ movie, Gunn firmly stated no, leaving the creative direction of the live-action project open and allowing him to focus on other upcoming projects.
The final inquiry concerned whether ‘Black Adam’, the Justice Society, and the ‘Shazam!’ films are part of the canon. Gunn responded with another no, effectively closing the chapter on that segment of DC films. This is consistent with his earlier comments to Den of Geek in 2025, where he clarified that ‘Black Adam’ and ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ are not included in the DCU.
The confusion arises from the appearances of Steve Agee and Jennifer Holland, who reprise their roles from ‘Peacemaker’ in both films. Gunn has stated that nothing is considered canon before ‘Creature Commandos’, although earlier events may be viewed as vague memories. He prefers a flexible approach to canon rather than strict rules.
In a universe built on interconnected narratives, clarifying canon is crucial. It informs viewers about which films are essential viewing and which can be overlooked. Gunn seems to prioritize clarity over pleasing everyone.
These responses also indicate the careful planning behind the DCU’s rollout. A non-existent Batman suit, an uncertain Flash status, and a ‘Blue Beetle’ caught between timelines all point to a studio still charting its course for the future. While this may frustrate eager fans, it also leaves room for unexpected developments.
As ‘Clayface’ premieres and the next wave of projects begins to take shape, fans can expect more rounds of questions and succinct answers from Gunn. If history is any guide, each response will likely ignite a new wave of speculation.
