James Gunn Responds to Tom Holland Joining the DCU with a Hilarious Reply
James Gunn has established himself as one of Hollywood’s most interactive studio heads, frequently engaging in fan discussions on social media. His willingness to connect directly with fans has turned his responses into something audiences eagerly anticipate, as a casual comment can sometimes lead to significant news.
This engagement has also made him a target for fan speculation, particularly regarding actors they hope will transition from Marvel to his expanding DC Universe. With ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ recently enjoying a successful theatrical run, it was only a matter of time before someone inquired about Tom Holland’s potential role in the DCU.
A fan posed the question to Gunn, suggesting various roles for Holland, including Beast Boy, Kid Flash, Speedy, Aqualad, one of the Robins, Kyle Rayner, Brainiac 5, or Mon-El. Gunn’s response was straightforward: he expressed doubt that a 30-year-old Tom would want to follow up ‘Spider-Man’ with Aqualad, effectively closing the door on that idea while leaving some possibilities open.
This reply exemplifies Gunn’s signature style, using dry humor to sidestep a fan-casting inquiry without outright confirming or denying anything. It also aligns with Holland’s real-life age and status as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young stars following his portrayal of Peter Parker.

Aqualad has a rich history within the DCU that adds depth to Gunn’s joke. The modern incarnation of the character, Jackson Hyde, was previously slated to lead an HBO Max series based on the graphic novel ‘You Brought Me the Ocean,’ with Charlize Theron attached as a producer. Although that project never materialized, it indicates that DC Studios has been interested in the character for some time.
Gunn’s interactions with fans have become a recurring theme this year. He has previously responded to critics questioning the tonal consistency of his DCU slate, using classic DC Comics covers to illustrate his point, and has employed cryptic social media posts to fuel speculation about future casting without providing any confirmations.
This track record makes exchanges like the one with Holland challenging to interpret. Gunn rarely shuts down possibilities entirely, even when his comments seem dismissive, and his history of teasing projects through seemingly casual remarks means fans are likely to continue analyzing this interaction for hidden implications.
For now, Holland remains firmly within the Marvel camp, with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ recently concluding one of the year’s most successful theatrical releases under director Destin Daniel Cretton. Whether there’s any real chance for a DC crossover in the future is something only Gunn seems willing to joke about at this time.
Meanwhile, the DCU has plenty of projects to keep fans engaged, with ‘Lanterns’ currently airing on HBO Max, ‘Supergirl’ recently released, and ‘Clayface’ set to hit theaters on October 23. Gunn’s Superman sequel, ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ is also slated for release in 2027, providing the studio with ample focus without needing to recruit talent from its rival.
