Jason Statham has established his brand around a reliable style of action entertainment, where audiences have a clear expectation before the lights dim. This formula has served him well throughout his career, despite the varying critical responses his films have received over the years.

His latest film, ‘Mutiny,’ hit theaters this week with the goal of continuing the momentum from his recent projects, which have included both hits and misses. Directed by Jean-François Richet, known for the Gerard Butler survival thriller ‘Plane,’ the film brings together much of the same creative team for a new high-concept action narrative.

The film’s premise follows a familiar pattern: ‘Mutiny’ has been labeled as a “Die Hard on a boat” story. Statham stars as Cole Reed, a former London cop turned bodyguard who witnesses the murder of his billionaire boss, gets framed for the crime, and embarks on a solo mission aboard a cargo ship to uncover the conspiracy. With reviews now in, the film has garnered a 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

This score places ‘Mutiny’ in a precarious position compared to Statham’s recent films. His earlier 2026 release ‘Shelter’ received a fresh 64% score, while ‘A Working Man’ scored 46%, and 2024’s ‘The Beekeeper’ performed better with a 71% rating, highlighting the inconsistency in critical reception across his latest projects.

Critics have expressed mixed opinions on what ‘Mutiny’ brings to the table. ScreenRant described the film as “aimless, dull, and uninspired with its action,” noting that while the setup is intriguing, the transition to the ship’s storyline is executed so poorly that it feels like a different movie altogether.

Conversely, Variety found redeeming qualities in Richet’s direction, praising his ability to stage extreme violence with a human touch and highlighting how the cargo ship itself becomes a character, with its various features repurposed as makeshift weaponry throughout the film.

Flickering Myth’s Robert Kojder offered a balanced view, acknowledging Statham’s physicality while raising concerns about the film’s treatment of its human trafficking subplot, suggesting it risks falling into “white savior action” tropes by reducing trafficked characters to mere motivations for Cole Reed’s actions.

Despite the mixed reviews, the film features a notable cast. Annabelle Wallis portrays Angie, the ship’s third mate and Cole’s main ally, while Roland Møller plays the antagonist Marko, the ship’s captain, alongside supporting performances from Jason Wong, Arnas Fedaravicius, and Adrian Lester.

Statham’s role extends beyond acting, as he also serves as a producer through his company, Punch Palace Productions, collaborating with MadRiver Pictures. This level of involvement indicates that he views this action vehicle as more than just another paycheck role, despite the mixed critical response.

For a star whose career has been built on genre reliability rather than critical acclaim, a 49% score is unlikely to hinder ‘Mutiny’s’ box office performance, especially considering his fanbase’s consistent support for similarly rated films. Ultimately, whether audiences embrace the film as they have his previous works will determine if ‘Mutiny’ achieves commercial success, even as critics remain divided on its quality.
