CBS’ ‘Tracker’ has spent nearly four seasons crafting one of broadcast television’s most cherished family dynamics, largely thanks to the tension between its two Shaw brothers. Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw has consistently been the steady anchor of the show, but it’s his intricate relationship with his older brother that keeps viewers engaged.

This dynamic has become even more complex as ‘Tracker’ delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding the Shaw family’s history, particularly their father’s enigmatic government work. With Season 4 currently in production, fans have been buzzing about the potential return of one beloved character.

The wait is finally over. Jensen Ackles has released new behind-the-scenes photos from the set of ‘Tracker’ Season 4, officially confirming his return as Russell Shaw, the estranged older brother whose loyalty and secrets have made him one of the series’ most captivating recurring figures.

This confirmation follows months of speculation, as Russell’s exit in Season 3 left his fate uncertain heading into the new season. Ackles has appeared in some capacity during every season of ‘Tracker’ thus far, although his screen time has generally been limited to a few episodes each season, making each appearance feel like a special event.

Justin Hartley announced Ackles’ return during a panel at Televerse 26, the Television Academy’s annual festival, putting an end to months of fan speculation. At the Los Angeles event, Hartley confirmed that Ackles would reprise his role as Colter’s brother, Russell Shaw, and mentioned that he would be back on set filming the following week.

According to Hartley, Russell’s return picks up right where his complex storyline left off. “We left him in a place where he was doing something for Colter — keeping a secret from him, but for Colter’s own good,” Hartley explained during the panel, via TVLine. “He took one for the team. Quid pro quo: ‘I’ll do this for you… just keep him out of it. He doesn’t need to know any of this. It’s to protect him.’”

That secret has seemingly caught up with him. Hartley hinted that when the brothers reunite this season, Russell will need a favor from Colter and his unique skill set, leading them to collaborate on a problem Russell has encountered, along with a friend.

Russell’s fluctuating presence has become integral to the show’s rhythm since ‘Tracker’ first debuted, and his absence would have marked a significant change for a series that has embraced the Shaw family’s tumultuous, unresolved history. Fans have long viewed Russell as one of the strongest supporting characters, and there was genuine concern that he might not play a role in this new chapter following his ambiguous exit in Season 3.

Production for ‘Tracker’ Season 4 has also moved from Vancouver, where the first three seasons were filmed, to Los Angeles, indicating a notable behind-the-scenes shift for the CBS drama while the central sibling story continues uninterrupted. The new season is set to premiere on Sunday, October 4, airing at a special time immediately following the Season 2 premiere of the ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff ‘Marshals.’

With Ackles now confirmed and filming already underway for his scenes, the stage is set for another round of Shaw family drama when ‘Tracker’ returns this fall.
