Jeremy Renner’s Intriguing Comic Book Post Sparks West Coast Avengers Speculation
Jeremy Renner has become quite the enigma for Marvel fans. Each time he shares a photo or clip related to ‘Hawkeye’, the speculation begins anew, and his latest social media post is no different.
Renner last portrayed Clint Barton in the 2021 Disney+ series ‘Hawkeye’, and there is currently no release date or official announcement regarding a second season. He has previously expressed confidence that a second season will occur, although he mentioned in 2025 that he declined an offer to return for half of his original salary. Nevertheless, he has openly stated his willingness to don the Hawkeye suit again.
This context makes his recent tease particularly intriguing. Renner posted an Instagram Story featuring a collection of comic books, prominently displaying ‘West Coast Avengers’ issues alongside a ‘Hawkeye’ comic. Fans quickly interpreted this as a hint towards a potential MCU team-up. However, Marvel has yet to confirm any such project, leaving it as mere speculation for now.

In the comics, the West Coast Avengers were the first spinoff team of the Avengers, operating on the opposite coast. The original lineup included Hawkeye, Iron Man’s James Rhodes, Mockingbird, Wonder Man, and Tigra, with Clint as the leader. Historically, this group has featured lesser-known heroes compared to the main Avengers team.
The MCU has already introduced many characters associated with this team. Figures like Hawkeye, Moon Knight, War Machine, Wonder Man, Mockingbird, U.S. Agent, Kate Bishop, and America Chavez have counterparts in the MCU, while only Tigra from the original roster has yet to make an appearance.
Fans have been piecing together clues for years. The idea of a West Coast-style team led by Clint, with Kate Bishop as his apprentice, has been a popular theory since ‘Hawkeye’ debuted. The series even included an Easter egg referencing a character whose home serves as the team’s headquarters in the comics. Additionally, there are strong hints that Clint’s wife Laura could be the MCU’s version of Mockingbird.
There’s another connection to consider. ‘VisionQuest’, the upcoming MCU series, derives its name from a storyline within the ‘West Coast Avengers’ comics, and the white Vision has been a significant member of the team over the years. Marvel has not disclosed whether this show will tie into a potential team.
Renner’s future in the MCU remains uncertain. At a recent Comic-Con Liverpool event, he humorously stated that he is not involved in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, joking that the Avengers might struggle without him. He has hinted at a possible appearance in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ instead. ‘Doomsday’ is set to release on December 18, while ‘Secret Wars’ is scheduled for December 17, 2027.
Marvel has confirmed that Renner will reprise his role as Clint for the Avengers Infinity Defense attraction at Disney California Adventure, part of an Avengers Campus expansion planned for 2028. He also shared a caption-less image of his Hawkeye costume in August, which ignited further speculation as additional photography for ‘Doomsday’ reportedly commenced. While none of this confirms a role in the films, it highlights the strong desire for his return.
If Marvel is seeking a way to reintroduce an original Avenger while launching something new, a West Coast team could be a clever solution. For now, the comic book image remains a single tease, and fans will have to wait for Marvel to clarify whether it holds any significance.
