Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel had a lot to say about Donald Trump’s latest idea — putting a 100% tariff on movies made outside the U.S. The former president shared the plan in a social media post over the weekend, saying it was a way to save Hollywood. But the details were vague, and the idea left many people, including Kimmel, confused.

“Trump’s now aiming his wrecking ball at Hollywood,” Kimmel said during his Monday night monologue on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He shared what Trump wrote online:

“The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat.

Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”

Kimmel made fun of how unclear this plan is: “We do? Because I don’t care where they’re made. I really don’t,” he said. “You know what? It’s what the late, great Hannibal Lecter would’ve wanted… Sonic – the illegal immigrant hedgehog – is a national security threat and he must be stopped!”

Kimmel also joked about where Trump may have gotten the idea.

“He said, ‘I have done some very strong research over the last week,’ which means he had brunch with Jon Voight at Mar-A-Lago this weekend,” Kimmel said, getting laughs from the audience.

And he added that this wasn’t just a punchline, reports say it’s true. Actor Jon Voight and his producing partner Steven Paul met with Trump recently and talked about ways to help the film industry.

Their plan includes tax breaks, funding for movie theaters, job training, and more. Tariffs were only mentioned for “limited circumstances,” but Trump appears to have run with it.

This is where he reportedly got the tariff, the movies idea – from Angelina Jolie’s 86-year-old father she won’t talk to,” Kimmel said. “What a great idea. Next year, The White Lotus is gonna be set at a Hampton Inn.”

Trump’s comments raised a lot of eyebrows in Hollywood. People are unsure if such a tariff could even be enforced or if it would be legal. Some see it as just another vague promise with little chance of happening.

Kimmel’s monologue summed up the confusion and humor many felt about the situation. Whether or not anything comes from the proposal, it definitely gave late-night hosts something to talk about.
