Johnny Depp Surprises Comic Con Panel As Ebenezer Scrooge Ahead Of ‘Ebenezer’ Release
Comic Con surprises typically come with some form of advance notice, even if it’s just a rumor circulating around the convention floor. This year, however, delivered an unexpected moment that even the panel’s moderators had not anticipated.
That surprise was none other than Johnny Depp, whose presence at San Diego Comic Con had already stirred excitement earlier in the day before he made a truly unexpected move. What began as a street appearance in the Gaslamp Quarter led to a moment that took everyone inside Hall H by surprise.
Depp, fully embodying his character as Ebenezer Scrooge, crashed Collider’s Directors on Directing panel in Hall H, a program unrelated to his upcoming film ‘Ebenezer.’ According to Deadline, which was close enough to witness the scene unfold, Depp hobbled onto the stage with a candle before handing it off to director John Francis Daley, who was seated at the end of the panel’s dais.
Once he had captured the room’s attention, Depp’s Scrooge turned to the audience and posed a pointed question in character, asking if they had no lives or responsibilities. The remark resonated as classic Scrooge grumpiness while simultaneously hinting at the unexpected nature of his appearance.
This stunt served as a lead-in for something even bigger, with Paramount releasing the first official trailer for ‘Ebenezer’ shortly after Depp’s panel crash concluded. The timing transformed Collider’s panel into an unexpected launchpad for one of the day’s most significant marketing reveals, a role the program had not been designed for.
Earlier in the day, Depp had been seen walking through the Gaslamp Quarter, fully transformed with a top hat, cane, and elaborate gray facial hair, drawing large crowds as he made his way toward the film’s immersive Scrooge and Marley pop-up shop.
During that street appearance, a fan greeted him with “good day to you, Mr. Scrooge,” and Depp remained in character, responding with the iconic line questioning what was so pleasant about it. This commitment continued seamlessly into his Hall H appearance later that evening.
This marks Depp’s first return to Comic Con since 2018, when he appeared in Hall H promoting ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald’ as the villain Grindelwald. Notably, Depp was not scheduled to appear at any official panels this year, making his decision to crash an unrelated program even more surprising for those in attendance.
Collider has a history of such surprises, having previously pulled off a similar stunt in 2022 when Keanu Reeves crashed its panel to debut the first teaser for ‘John Wick, Chapter 4.’ Following up with Depp’s Scrooge crashing the stage this year enhances the panel’s growing reputation as a venue for unexpected Hollywood cameos.
With the trailer now released and ‘Ebenezer’ set to hit theaters on November 13, Depp’s Comic Con appearance has already become one of the most memorable moments of the entire convention. Few stunts have managed to generate this much organic buzz by crashing a program unrelated to the film itself.
For an actor whose Hollywood comeback has been closely monitored by fans and the industry alike, choosing to disrupt another’s spotlight rather than simply appear at his own panel feels like a fitting piece of theater.
