Johnny Depp’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’ Comeback Gains Momentum with Jack Sparrow’s Son and Margot Robbie
The future of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ remains uncertain, but recent reports indicate that Disney is actively rethinking the franchise’s direction. Following the release of the last film in 2017, the series has faced years of development challenges, with various scripts, spin-off concepts, and casting ideas being explored at different times.
A new report from The InSneider suggests that Disney’s leadership now prioritizes the franchise. Under the new studio heads, Josh D’Amaro and Dana Walden, there is a desire to revitalize ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ by returning to the original films’ tone while modernizing the narrative and managing costs with a reduced budget.
One intriguing detail from the report is the potential focus on Jack Sparrow’s son in the next film. Additionally, Margot Robbie is rumored to be involved in some capacity, leading to speculation that earlier plans for a separate spin-off featuring Robbie may now be integrated into the main sixth installment.
The report also mentions that writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns is set to develop the script. However, Disney has yet to officially confirm any of this information.
The shift in character focus raises questions about Johnny Depp’s future with the franchise. His portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow has been central to ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ since 2003, yet his participation in upcoming films has been in doubt for years. Earlier reports hinted that the franchise could proceed without him, but recent comments from producer Jerry Bruckheimer have countered that notion.
Bruckheimer has repeatedly stated that the script is still a work in progress and nothing is finalized. In a previous interview, he emphasized the importance of getting the story right before advancing, stating, “If we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen.” This indicates that the project is still in its early stages and may undergo further changes.
He also addressed the existence of multiple script versions being developed at various times. According to him, the team has been experimenting with different approaches but has yet to settle on a final version. This reinforces the idea that the franchise is still in a planning phase rather than actively in production.
Recently, Bruckheimer also commented on casting rumors and returning characters. He confirmed that discussions regarding Margot Robbie have occurred, but he denied a specific rumor about Jack Sparrow’s son being confirmed as the lead. His remarks suggest that while various ideas are being considered, nothing has been finalized regarding the storyline or character lineup.
At the Producers Guild Awards in 2026, Bruckheimer addressed speculation about Johnny Depp’s return, refuting claims that the franchise was moving away from Depp entirely. He remarked, “That’s not true,” adding, “If it’s up to me, he’ll be in it.” This indicates that Depp’s return remains a possibility, contingent on the script’s development and Disney’s ultimate decisions.
The situation underscores the project’s instability. On one hand, reports suggest Disney is considering a new direction with younger characters and a potential generational shift. On the other hand, key creative figures continue to express interest in bringing back the original cast, particularly Depp’s Jack Sparrow.
The ‘Pirates’ franchise has struggled to establish a clear path since its last release. The 2017 film ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’ received mixed critical reviews, despite performing well at the box office. Since then, Disney has explored various approaches, including spin-offs and reboots, but none have progressed to full production.

The concept of blending a new lead character with returning legacy roles seems to be the current focus of discussion. However, as the project is still being written and revised, no confirmed storyline has emerged yet.
For now, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’ remains in development, with multiple ideas competing for attention. Whether it will evolve into a full reboot, a continuation featuring new characters, or a combination of both old and new remains to be seen. What is clear is that Disney is still searching for a version of the franchise that resonates, and each new report indicates that the final direction is still being shaped.
