Kevin Feige Reveals Ant-Man’s Surprising New Role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has provided fresh insights into Ant-Man’s role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, indicating a surprising new direction for Paul Rudd’s character, Scott Lang, within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
This information comes from a recent profile of Paul Rudd published by The Hollywood Reporter, where Feige discussed the character’s evolution since his introduction in 2015’s ‘Ant-Man’.
Scott Lang started as a small-time criminal turned unlikely hero, later participating in significant MCU events like ‘Captain America: Civil War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’, where he played a crucial role in addressing the aftermath of the Avengers’ defeat by Thanos.
Following a quieter appearance in ‘Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania’, which delved into the Quantum Realm and introduced Kang the Conqueror, Scott’s future seemed uncertain. The conclusion of that film hinted at his unintentional contribution to larger multiversal issues, setting the stage for his involvement in upcoming Avengers narratives.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ progressing and Kang no longer the primary threat, Feige has unveiled a new trajectory for Scott Lang. He described the character’s new role succinctly, stating that Ant-Man is now “more of an elder statesman, dealing with other newer characters.”
This suggests that Scott has transitioned from being a rookie hero or a supporting player in major conflicts to a seasoned figure who may mentor younger heroes as the MCU continues to explore multiverse-level challenges. This concept hints at a mentor-like version of Ant-Man, potentially collaborating with new teams forming within the franchise.
Feige also elaborated on why Paul Rudd was the ideal choice for the role, emphasizing the blend of humor and charm that characterizes Scott. He remarked, “We needed this guy to be a criminal but also someone that you’re rooting for no matter what, and that’s Paul. He’s also funny and good-looking and unbelievably charismatic.”
Paul Rudd himself reflected on his journey as Scott Lang, noting that his initial interest in the role stemmed from director Edgar Wright’s original vision for ‘Ant-Man’. Although Wright eventually departed from the project, Rudd remained and helped shape the character into one of Marvel’s more relatable heroes.
Looking back at his career, Rudd acknowledged that not every project has been a triumph, but he values the experiences. He quoted Tina Fey when discussing less successful films, saying, “Sometimes you do something and you thought the script was great and it really works and then you’re watching it, and all of a sudden the credits come up, and you go, ‘Wow, that one shrunk in the wash.’”
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is anticipated to unite heroes from various corners of the Marvel multiverse, setting the stage for a significant crossover event. The narrative will reportedly involve characters from multiple realities confronting a formidable new threat that challenges their understanding of their worlds.
The film is currently slated for release on December 18, marking another pivotal moment in the ongoing expansion of the MCU, with Ant-Man now positioned as a more experienced figure among a new generation of heroes.
