Kieran Culkin’s Caesar Flickerman Revealed in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’
Few characters in Panem are as unforgettable as the man who turns children’s deaths into prime-time television. Caesar Flickerman, known for his glittering suits and unshakable smile, remains one of the franchise’s most memorable figures. His enthusiasm amplifies the horror of the Games, making it even more chilling.
Stanley Tucci made the role iconic in the first four films, so finding a replacement was a daunting task. Now, ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping‘ is set to introduce a younger version of this beloved host. Fans are eager to see how his flair for showmanship will be portrayed.
A fresh image offers fans their best look yet at Kieran Culkin in the role. He dons a textured blue jacket adorned with gold embroidery shaped like fish, complemented by black gloves and a neatly groomed mustache. He raises one finger as if mid-announcement while holding a slender pointer.
Behind him, a crowd of seated onlookers fills what appears to be a large auditorium. This setting hints at the performative, rehearsed energy that the character is known for, suggesting that this younger Caesar is still developing the over-the-top persona audiences will come to recognize.

Culkin’s casting was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter, which noted it as his follow-up to an Oscar win. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman stated in the announcement that his “scene-stealing presence and undeniable charm are perfect for Caesar Flickerman.” She emphasized that while Tucci made the character unforgettable, Culkin will make the role distinctly his own.
Producer Nina Jacobson praised Culkin’s magnetism, wit, and unpredictability. She remarked that a host like Caesar transforms brutality into entertainment, and an actor as layered as Culkin ensures audiences remain engaged. This description aligns with the positive social reactions to earlier glimpses of Culkin in the role.
The film adapts Suzanne Collins’ prequel novel, taking place 24 years before the original ‘The Hunger Games’. It begins on the morning of the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Joseph Zada stars as Haymitch Abernathy, a District 12 tribute chosen to compete.
The Quarter Quell twist doubles the number of contestants. Instead of one boy and one girl from each of the 12 districts, two boys and two girls are sent into the arena, raising the stakes and setting up an even bloodier spectacle.
Culkin is part of an ensemble that revisits familiar characters at earlier stages of their lives. Whitney Peak plays Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s girlfriend, while Jesse Plemons portrays a young Plutarch Heavensbee. Elle Fanning takes on a younger Effie Trinket, and Maya Hawke appears as Wiress.
The cast also includes Ralph Fiennes, Glenn Close, Mckenna Grace, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. Francis Lawrence returns to direct from a screenplay by Billy Ray and Michael Lesslie. Lawrence has helmed every installment of the franchise since ‘Catching Fire’.

The film arrives with high expectations, as the previous five films have grossed over $3.3 billion at the box office. The novel sold 1.5 million copies in its first week across major markets, indicating that fans are eager to return to Panem.
The movie is set to be rated PG-13, with a second trailer released in September. Anticipation continues to build as the release date approaches, with each new image revealing how the filmmakers are balancing nostalgia with fresh energy.
‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ opens in theaters on November 20, bringing the series back to the big screen with a new perspective on its most famous characters. For Culkin, this is an opportunity to add his own comedic and dramatic flair to a role cherished by millions.
If this latest image is any indication, he is ready to embrace the flamboyance that defines Caesar. The sparkle is evident, along with a hint of mischief.
