Few franchises hold as much emotional significance for dedicated gaming fans as ‘Kingdom Hearts’. This cherished action RPG series from Square Enix and Disney has captivated audiences for over twenty years, intertwining beloved Disney universes with an intricate original mythology that has developed into one of gaming’s most unexpectedly complex narratives.

As anticipation builds for the long-awaited fourth main installment, the question of where players can experience it has become a hot topic within the community.

The game follows protagonist Sora and familiar characters as they navigate the enigmatic city of Quadratum, a vast and visually striking environment that signifies a notable tonal shift for the franchise.

When ‘Kingdom Hearts IV’ was initially announced in 2022, it was introduced as part of a new storyline known as the Lost Master Arc, with Sora at the forefront of what Square Enix described as an epic new chapter for the series. Since that announcement, fans have largely awaited more information regarding the game’s scope, platforms, and direction.

That silence was broken significantly during the June Nintendo Direct. Square Enix revealed a new trailer for ‘Kingdom Hearts IV’, showcasing fresh gameplay footage that featured Sora battling through a contemporary city environment, intense Heartless encounters, and an extended glimpse at Quadratum.

The presentation made it clear that the sequel has progressed well beyond early development, moving into a phase that fans can genuinely look forward to.

The announcement regarding platforms was a highlight for many in the community. Square Enix confirmed that ‘Kingdom Hearts IV’ will be available on Nintendo Switch 2 at launch, marking the first mainline entry in the series to debut natively on a Nintendo console from day one.

The official KINGDOM HEARTS account on X confirmed the simultaneous rollout, stating that the title will launch across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox on PC, Epic Games Store, and Steam all at once. For a franchise that had previously kept Nintendo players dependent on cloud versions of older titles, this represents a significant and overdue change.

The Nintendo Direct presentation also unveiled a ‘Kingdom Hearts Collection’ that bundles the entire series, from the HD 1.5 and 2.5 ReMIX collections to ‘Kingdom Hearts III’ with the Re Mind DLC, bringing the complete saga natively to Switch 2 ahead of the new installment’s release. The collection will be available on Switch 2 starting October 8, with each title offered individually or collectively through the Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece bundle.

New footage from the Direct also showcased a scene featuring two hooded figures conversing in the rain and provided another look at Strelitzia, a character who first appeared in the original reveal trailer.

The displayed trailer featured a “development footage, subject to change” watermark, serving as a reminder that the game is still progressing toward its final form. However, the substantial amount of gameplay shown indicates significant advancement. Push Square noted that the footage presented during the Direct included a complete HUD and button prompts, details that were later omitted from the official upload on the series’ YouTube channel.

While no release date has been announced for ‘Kingdom Hearts IV’, the combination of a broad platform announcement, extensive new gameplay, and a fresh trailer suggests that Square Enix is poised to welcome one of gaming’s most passionate fanbases back in a meaningful way. Whether you’re a Switch 2 owner, a PC player, or a PlayStation enthusiast, Sora’s next adventure is on the horizon, and the only remaining question is when. Are you more eager to revisit the older titles in the collection first, or are you diving straight into everything we know about ‘Kingdom Hearts IV’?
