Kit Connor and Diana Silvers to Star in Janicza Bravo’s ‘PRƎPPY’ on the Preppy Murder Case
True crime has emerged as one of Hollywood’s most engaging genres, yet few cases from the 1980s have left as significant a cultural impact as the tragic events that transpired in New York’s Central Park nearly four decades ago. The story surrounding Jennifer Levin’s death and the ensuing media frenzy has been revisited in various television movies and crime dramas over the years, but it has yet to receive the high-profile feature treatment that is now in development.
This new approach is spearheaded by filmmaker Janicza Bravo, celebrated for her unique blend of discomfort and absurdist humor in films like ‘Zola’ and ‘Lemon,’ as well as her work on the BBC One series ‘The Listeners.’ Bravo’s involvement suggests a refreshingly unconventional take on material that has typically been presented with a more traditional true-crime seriousness in previous adaptations.
As reported exclusively by Deadline, Kit Connor is set to star alongside Diana Silvers in the film titled ‘PRƎPPY,’ with Bravo directing for STX Entertainment and Aggregate Films. The project is based on an original screenplay by David Levine and Rose Lichter-Marck, exploring the summer of 1986 leading up to the murder of recent high school graduate Jennifer Levin by Robert Chambers, a former private-school student from Manhattan.
The case, which unfolded in Central Park and earned the “Preppy Killer” moniker from the press, captivated the nation and brought issues of privilege, class, and sexuality into the spotlight. Additional reports indicate that the narrative follows two young women who unknowingly fall for the same charming yet dangerous man during a scorching New York summer, culminating in one of them being found murdered, which sparks a media firestorm over victim’s rights and sensationalized reporting.
Connor’s casting comes on the heels of exciting news for the actor, who has recently been confirmed as Cyclops in Marvel’s upcoming live-action X-Men reboot. This high-profile superhero role has positioned Connor as one of the industry’s most promising rising stars, making his transition to this dark, character-driven true crime drama a notable creative shift.
Silvers, recognized for her performance in ‘Booksmart,’ completes the film’s central duo, joining a project that is already generating considerable buzz in the industry due to its subject matter and the talent involved. Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and John Buderwitz are producing for Aggregate Films, while Peter Coleman and Paula Manzanedo are producing for STX, with Bravo also taking on a producer role.
This film isn’t the first adaptation of this particular case. A 1989 television movie titled ‘The Preppie Murder’ previously dramatized the events, featuring William Baldwin as Chambers and Lara Flynn Boyle as Levin, and the case has also inspired episodes of both the original ‘Law & Order’ and ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent’ over the years.
With production reportedly set to commence as early as next month, ‘PRƎPPY’ appears to be swiftly moving from development into production. Given Bravo’s history of presenting unconventional perspectives on challenging subject matter, the film promises to deliver a genuinely distinct interpretation of a case that has remained embedded in American true crime lore for nearly four decades.
