Marvel enthusiasts have long held onto the hope that Kit Harington’s brief yet captivating appearance in ‘Eternals’ would evolve into a significant superhero storyline. The actor’s five minutes as Dane Whitman, highlighted by that iconic post-credits scene, led many to believe that Black Knight would soon make a major entrance into the MCU.

However, that excitement has become increasingly complex over time. ‘Eternals’ received mixed reviews from critics and underperformed at the box office upon its release in 2021. Since then, Marvel has quietly sidelined nearly all unresolved plot points from the film, including Dane’s evolution into the sword-wielding hero.

Now, Harington is addressing the current status of his MCU involvement, and the update isn’t quite what fans were hoping for. In a recent discussion with MovieWeb, the actor didn’t dismiss the possibility of returning but was candid about the present situation. “I mean, I’d love to. I don’t think there’s any plan to,” he stated when asked about reprising his role.

This sentiment is familiar to those who have followed Harington’s remarks on Black Knight over the years. The actor has consistently shown genuine enthusiasm for the character while recognizing that Marvel Studios hasn’t provided him with any concrete plans.

What makes this update particularly poignant is Harington’s evident desire to play the role. He elaborated on what draws him to Dane Whitman’s storyline, highlighting the character’s struggles as he wields the cursed Ebony Blade. “I hate to break it to you, but I think he’s a wicked character,” he shared. “There’s a part of him, that whole Ebony Blade stuff, where the more he kills, the worse he gets, the more addicted. I think he’s such a great parable of addiction. And I think he’s someone who starts good, goes bad. I think he’s great. But we’ll see. I don’t know if there’s any plan.”

For those unfamiliar with the comics, the Ebony Blade is no ordinary weapon. In Marvel lore, the sword corrupts its wielder, gradually transforming them into a more bloodthirsty version of themselves with each use. This morally complex material could set Dane Whitman apart from the typical heroes in the MCU, which likely explains Harington’s recurring interest in it during interviews.

The post-credits scene of ‘Eternals’ clearly hinted at this trajectory. Dane is seen opening a box containing the Ebony Blade while an unidentified voice, later confirmed to be Mahershala Ali’s Blade, asks if he’s ready to take it up. This seemed to pave the way for a crossover, but that connection never came to fruition, and Blade’s own film has faced years of behind-the-scenes challenges.

Fans have reacted to Harington’s latest comments with a mix of disappointment and lingering hope on social media, expressing frustration that Marvel has left the character in limbo for so long. Others noted that the multiverse era of the MCU has a history of resurrecting characters once thought forgotten, keeping the possibility alive for Black Knight to eventually shine.

For now, the decision rests with Marvel Studios. Harington has made it clear he is eager to return, but until the studio commits to a project, Dane Whitman’s journey to becoming Black Knight remains exactly where it has been since 2021: teased, but far from confirmed.
