DC Studios was in dire need of a success, especially after ‘Supergirl’ underperformed at the box office. With James Gunn and Peter Safran’s rebooted DC Universe facing skepticism about its future, the stakes were high for their latest release.

‘Lanterns‘ debuted under significant pressure, tasked with filling the coveted Sunday night slot previously held by ‘House of the Dragon.’ The series, featuring Kyle Chandler as the seasoned Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as rookie John Stewart, was expected to deliver strong viewership right from the start.

Fortunately for DC, ‘Lanterns’ has made a remarkable impact, ranking among the top five series launches in HBO Max history, both in the U.S. and globally. It has become the highest-performing comic book series the platform has ever introduced.

The viewership numbers are impressive. According to data from HBO and HBO Max, the show attracted 9.3 million viewers worldwide within its first three days, with 6.6 million of those coming from the United States. This figure surpassed the debuts of several recent HBO hits, including ‘IT: Welcome to Derry,’ ‘The Penguin,’ and ‘True Detective: Night Country.’

This achievement is even more notable in context. ‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ started with 5.7 million U.S. viewers and eventually reached a global average of 27.1 million, while ‘The Penguin’ and ‘True Detective: Night Country’ ended with 19.8 million and 17.5 million global viewers, respectively. If ‘Lanterns’ continues on a similar path, its strong start indicates potential for significant growth as the season progresses.

Moreover, ‘Lanterns’ outperformed HBO’s own ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,’ which garnered 6.7 million U.S. viewers in its first three days back in January. This positions the Green Lantern series as one of the network’s strongest launches across all genres, not just superhero content. For DC Studios, ‘Lanterns’ stands as the biggest series premiere the studio has ever had on HBO Max, surpassing previous titles like ‘The Penguin,’ ‘Peacemaker,’ and the animated series ‘Creature Commandos.’

The series has maintained its popularity as well. Following its debut, ‘Lanterns’ has consistently ranked near the top of HBO Max’s daily charts, with Episode 3 reportedly pushing global viewership past 10 million, setting a new series record and confirming that the initial buzz was not just a fleeting moment.

Much of the show’s success can be attributed to its unique approach. Instead of relying on cosmic battles, ‘Lanterns’ opts for a slow-burn procedural style, following Hal and John as they delve into a murder investigation in the American heartland, which gradually uncovers a more extensive mystery. Showrunner Chris Mundy, along with co-creators Damon Lindelof and Tom King, focused on atmosphere and character development rather than large-scale action, a strategy that seems to resonate well with viewers.

As the eight-episode first season continues to roll out weekly, the early success of ‘Lanterns’ offers DC Studios a genuine reason for optimism following a challenging period at the box office. If the series can maintain its momentum through its remaining episodes, it could redefine how the studio approaches prestige television, demonstrating that a thoughtful, character-driven mystery can stand alongside the biggest names on the platform.

For a franchise in need of a strong statement, ‘Lanterns’ has certainly made one in a significant way.
