‘Lanterns’ Fans Get Long-Awaited Green Lantern Suit Reveal as HBO Unveils Hal Jordan
HBO’s gradual unveiling of its upcoming DCU series has tested the patience of fans for nearly a year. With vague set photos, intentionally obscured trailers, and a costume tease that only heightened the intrigue, ‘Lanterns‘ has kept its key visual—the superhero in his suit—under wraps longer than most recent superhero projects.
The series features Kyle Chandler as veteran Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as rookie John Stewart, two intergalactic officers drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery while investigating a murder in the heart of America. Framed by DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn as an earthbound mystery reminiscent of HBO’s ‘True Detective,’ the show embraces a more grounded and gritty storytelling style, contrasting with the colorful tone of previous Green Lantern adaptations.

Recently released photos showcase Chandler fully suited up as Hal Jordan, providing fans with their clearest glimpse of the character in action. The images depict Chandler in the Green Lantern armor, standing outside what seems to be a residential doorway, maintaining the show’s grounded, procedural aesthetic even while in full superhero attire.

This reveal follows months of visual teasing that left parts of the fanbase frustrated. Earlier trailers displayed the suit hanging on a rack in muted brown tones rather than the character’s iconic vibrant green, igniting online discussions about whether the costume had strayed too far from the comics. It later became evident that the subdued colors represented an aged, weathered version of the suit, fitting Hal’s role as a seasoned veteran nearing retirement within the show’s narrative.

Chandler revealed that the suit’s inclusion in the series was uncertain. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, he explained that the production team deliberated for a long time about whether Hal would wear a Green Lantern suit at all, ultimately deciding to include it late in the process.
This last-minute choice highlights how ‘Lanterns’ has approached its source material differently than previous big-screen adaptations. Instead of focusing on suit reveals and cosmic spectacle, the series emphasizes its buddy-cop mystery structure, with Hal mentoring Stewart as his future successor while they investigate a case linked to the broader DCU.

The premiere episode reportedly begins with archival-style footage that establishes Hal Jordan as Earth’s first Green Lantern, introducing the suit through an in-universe television interview rather than a conventional action sequence. This framing device has alleviated some of the earlier skepticism from fans, providing the character’s most refined on-screen appearance since the marketing campaign began.
With ‘Lanterns’ now several episodes into its run on HBO Max since its August 16 premiere, these latest suit photos represent another step in the show’s gradual reveal strategy, offering fans a clearer view of a costume that sparked considerable debate long before it was seen in action.
