‘The Dog Stars’ Struggles at Box Office Amid Tough Competition
Ridley Scott has established a reputation for ambitious filmmaking, but not every project hits the mark. His latest film, ‘The Dog Stars,’ faced a challenging opening weekend, competing against two of the year’s biggest blockbusters. The results have proven disappointing for one of Hollywood’s most esteemed directors.
‘The Dog Stars’ is a post-apocalyptic thriller featuring Jacob Elordi as Hig, a solitary survivor navigating a ravaged world with his dog after discovering a mysterious broadcast signal that prompts him to seek its origin. The film boasts an ensemble cast that includes Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney, and Benedict Wong, along with cinematography by Oscar winner Erik Messerschmidt and a marketing campaign that heavily promoted its IMAX experience.
Despite this impressive lineup, the film has flopped at the box office. ‘The Dog Stars’ opened to a mere $8 million domestically from 3,330 theaters, landing in a disappointing fifth place for the weekend, with a reported production budget exceeding $80 million, according to Variety.
This significant disparity between budget and opening weekend earnings places ‘The Dog Stars’ among Scott’s most notable financial failures in recent years. It marks his lowest domestic debut since 2021’s ‘The Last Duel,’ which earned just $4.7 million against a budget of around $100 million, and falls short of his 2013 thriller ‘The Counselor,’ which ultimately grossed about $16 million domestically.
The film’s reception has not improved its situation either. Currently, it holds a 40% score on Rotten Tomatoes and received a mediocre C-plus grade from CinemaScore polls conducted over the opening weekend, indicating that the underwhelming box office performance is not solely due to tough competition.
Given its scale, financial expectations for the film were always going to be challenging. With production costs estimated between $70 million and $110 million before marketing and distribution, industry analysts suggest the film would need to gross over $150 million worldwide just to break even, a target that now seems increasingly unattainable following its sluggish start.
This disappointing outcome comes at a tricky time for 20th Century Studios as a whole. While parent company Disney has enjoyed significant successes this year with hits like ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2,’ it has also faced setbacks with high-profile releases like the live-action ‘Moana’ and ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ both of which fell short of their production budgets.

Scott’s film also faced the misfortune of launching alongside two major box office hits, with ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ continuing its record-breaking success and the long-delayed ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ making a surprising comeback. In this context, ‘The Dog Stars’ had little chance of breaking through.
Regardless of how the rest of its theatrical run unfolds, the film’s opening weekend figures already represent a painful chapter in Scott’s otherwise illustrious career.
