Leaked ‘Lanterns’ Set Photos Reveal Aaron Pierre in the Role & Confirm The Show’s “Grounded” Vibe

Lanterns is an upcoming American TV series based on DC Comics, featuring the famous Green Lantern characters, Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television, it will be the third TV show in the new DC Universe (DCU). The series follows Jordan and Stewart as they investigate a mysterious case on Earth.
The show will star Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, with Kelly Macdonald and Nathan Fillion also in key roles. The series was originally developed by Greg Berlanti in 2019 but was reworked after James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in 2022.
Recently, some set photos surfaced on X courtesy of Ed Stanton. The photos showcase Pierre in the role. Pierre is wearing what appears to be a hospital uniform or uniform in general and in one of the photos he even has a gun:
The photos certainly prove one thing, the show will indeed be grounded. This is the second look at the characters in the show and like the “first look” images, cosmic elements seem to be missing, which is not a surprise.
It’s been previously confirmed the series does not follow any specific Green Lantern comic book storyline, but it includes many elements from the comics. The characters will have their Green Lantern rings and powers, and other parts of the Green Lantern universe will be shown or mentioned.
Showrunner Chris Mundy wanted the series to feel more realistic and grounded while still respecting the Green Lantern mythology. His goal was to create a deep, character-driven HBO drama that both longtime fans and newcomers could enjoy.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn was excited that Lanterns would have a unique tone, different from the upcoming Superman movie, which also includes a Green Lantern character, Guy Gardner.
Set to premiere on HBO in early 2026, Lanterns will have eight episodes and will be part of the DCU’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The show will have a detective story vibe, inspired by shows like True Detective and Slow Horses. Filming is taking place in Los Angeles, and the first two episodes will be directed by James Hawes.
