Liu Kang vs. Shang-Chi: ‘Mortal Kombat II’ Star Ludi Lin Weighs In on the Epic Showdown
For years, fans of action cinema have passionately debated hypothetical matchups, and the conversation surrounding Liu Kang versus Shang-Chi is certainly one of the most intriguing. Both characters are iconic martial arts warriors from different universes, with one being the God of Fire and champion of Earthrealm, while the other wields ten ancient rings of immense power. When pitted against each other, the outcome sparks genuine interest, especially according to the actor currently portraying one of them.
‘Mortal Kombat II’ made its theatrical debut on May 8, directed once again by Simon McQuoid, and features Liu Kang alongside a talented cast that includes Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Hiroyuki Sanada, Jessica McNamee, and newcomers Tati Gabrielle and Adeline Rudolph. The sequel’s release was moved from October 2025 to May 8 to position it as a summer blockbuster, boasting an estimated production budget of $80 million. It opened with a strong $40 million domestic debut, a promising figure when compared to the original ‘Mortal Kombat,’ which earned $84 million worldwide, largely due to pandemic-related challenges and Warner Bros.’ decision to release all its theatrical titles simultaneously on HBO Max.
During the promotional tour for the film, Ludi Lin was asked the burning question on fans’ minds: who would emerge victorious in a battle between Liu Kang and Shang-Chi? His response, captured in a widely circulated clip, was both self-aware and entertainingly diplomatic. “He’s got all 10 rings, right? And I think those powers haven’t been fully explored yet, right? So, I don’t know what else he’s got,” Lin remarked. This answer cleverly avoids definitively choosing a winner while acknowledging the formidable nature of Shang-Chi’s abilities.
This debate is significant, as both characters represent a vital aspect of Asian-led action cinema, with their respective franchises carving out important cultural spaces. Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi became a landmark for Asian representation in blockbuster films when ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ grossed $432.2 million worldwide. Similarly, Lin’s Liu Kang stands as one of the most iconic Asian characters in gaming history, with his portrayal across both ‘Mortal Kombat’ films consistently highlighted.
Lin has openly discussed the importance of Asian representation in his commitment to the role, describing his portrayal of Liu Kang as a career milestone for a Chinese-Canadian actor in Hollywood. He has also emphasized that the character continues to evolve. In an interview with Variety, Lin described Liu Kang in the sequel as being in a darker, more complex emotional state: “He just steps more into his power. It’s the next step in his evolution.”

In an interview with Hype Malaysia, Lin further elaborated on Liu Kang’s emotional journey. “For anyone who knows that kind of grief, it’s a very heavy place,” he said. “So definitely, he has a lot of grief inside him at the start of the second movie. A lot of fury, anger, and complex emotions.”
This internal arc adds depth to the Liu Kang versus Shang-Chi debate. While Shang-Chi’s rings are powerful and their full potential remains largely uncharted, Liu Kang is a god of fire who is actively enhancing his abilities with each appearance. Lin has likened this character development to a Dragon Ball-style Super Saiyan upgrade, framing Liu Kang’s journey as one of continuous escalation.
On the physical front, Lin took his role seriously, growing out his hair after wearing a wig in the first film and building significant muscle to match his imposing co-stars. He and Max Huang, who portrays Kung Lao, dedicated considerable effort to their fight sequence, with Lin stating, “we put a lot of work into that fight, and we’re both really proud of what we accomplished.”
While the crossover debate may never reach a definitive conclusion, Lin’s response captures the essence of both characters. The Ten Rings are undeniably formidable and largely unexplored, while Liu Kang, as portrayed by Lin, is a warrior whose full potential has yet to be realized.
