Lupita Nyong’o Addresses Racist Backlash Over Casting as Helen of Troy in ‘The Odyssey’
Lupita Nyong’o is speaking out after encountering a wave of online backlash regarding her role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film ‘The Odyssey’.
In this film, Nyong’o portrays Helen of Troy, a renowned figure in Greek mythology. Often described as the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen’s narrative is tied to the onset of the Trojan War after she elopes with Paris of Troy.
The casting decision has ignited strong reactions online. Some critics, including writer Matt Walsh, expressed disapproval, stating, “not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world’”, and labeled director Christopher Nolan a “coward” for his choice. Tech billionaire Elon Musk also chimed in, agreeing with the criticism and suggesting that Nolan’s decision was motivated by awards considerations.
The backlash rapidly spread across social media, sparking heated discussions about casting, mythology, and representation in high-budget films.
In an interview with Elle, Nyong’o calmly addressed the criticism, emphasizing the creative aspects of the project. She remarked, “This is a mythological story,” and expressed her support for Nolan’s vision. Nyong’o stated, “I’m very supportive of Chris’ intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling. Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.”
Nyong’o also shared her approach to the role of Helen, focusing on the character’s deeper significance rather than physical appearance. She noted, “You can’t perform beauty,” and explained her desire to understand the character beyond mere looks. She added, “I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks? That’s the thing about doing such a well-known text, which has been studied and interpreted and derived from. The research could be endless.”
Produced by Universal Pictures, the film is a grand adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem. Directed by Christopher Nolan, it features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as Athena, and Charlize Theron as Calypso.
Nyong’o’s remarks also highlighted the broader casting philosophy of the film. She emphasized that the production showcases a diverse and global cast, viewing it as integral to the story’s scale and ambition.
She stated, “It’s quite something to be a part of ‘The Odyssey,’ because it is so grand. It spans worlds. So that’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time.”
Other cast members, including Elliot Page and musician Travis Scott, have also faced online scrutiny for their undisclosed roles.
Despite the controversy, filming has concluded, and the movie remains one of Hollywood’s most anticipated releases. Discussions surrounding Nyong’o’s casting continue online, but she has made it clear that her focus is on the work itself rather than the backlash.
