M. Night Shyamalan Reveals He’s Working on His Next Movie
Few directors transition from one project to another as swiftly as M. Night Shyamalan. Even before a film hits theaters, he is often deep into the next, filling notebooks with concepts and sketching outlines. This creative rhythm has characterized his career for decades.
His upcoming film, ‘Remain’, is still several months away. The supernatural romantic thriller, co-created with novelist Nicholas Sparks, was initially scheduled for October 23, 2026, but Warner Bros. has shifted it to February 5, 2027, with an international release beginning on February 3. The studio cited the film’s romantic narrative and strong presales for ‘Wuthering Heights’, alongside the highest test scores of Shyamalan’s career.
Now, Shyamalan is looking forward. He has begun working on his next movie, an idea he has been nurturing for many years. While details such as the title, cast, or genre remain undisclosed, it aligns with a pattern he has followed throughout his career.
Shyamalan has often described a ritual for each new project. In a 2024 Instagram post, he shared that he selects a notebook that resonates with him and fills it with notes and ideas. Once it’s brimming, he transitions to an outline and then a script.
M. Night Shyamalan says he’s started working on his next movie
“I’ve had the idea for a long time… many, many years” https://t.co/LfJkoIi8Ah— CoveredGeekly (@CoveredGeekly) October 20, 2026
This habit reemerged recently. During an interview with Collider at his Beyond Fest retrospective, he showcased the notes for the film that follows ‘Remain’, indicating that it is still in the notes phase. Thus, the project is in the very early stages of development, with no script or formal announcement yet.
These comments follow a significant few weeks for the filmmaker. Beyond Fest and American Cinematheque hosted his first West Coast retrospective, celebrating nearly three decades of his work. At a screening of ‘The Sixth Sense’ on September 29, he surprised the audience by presenting ‘Remain’ instead, followed by a Q&A moderated by Jon M. Chu.
Early reactions have been positive. Attendees described it as a romantic throwback to his earlier works, commending its sincerity and another score from James Newton Howard. One viewer remarked that Jake Gyllenhaal is an ideal Shyamalan lead, both subdued and soulful.
The film centers on New York architect Tate Donovan, portrayed by Gyllenhaal, who travels to Cape Cod to design his best friend’s summer home while attempting to rebuild his life. There, he encounters Wren, played by Phoebe Dynevor, in a narrative that intertwines love and unease. The cast also features Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Ashley Walters, and Tracy Ifeachor.
Shyamalan and Sparks collaborated on the story, with Shyamalan penning the screenplay while Sparks authored a novel. Released in October 2025, the novel became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller. Shyamalan has clarified that the film is not an adaptation and the book is not a novelization, but rather two storytellers narrating the same story in their unique ways.
Another significant aspect of Shyamalan’s approach is his funding method. He has self-financed his films for years, with studios like Warner Bros. typically stepping in as distributors. His previous film, ‘Trap’, earned $83 million worldwide on a $30 million production budget.
This independence allows him to pursue projects he has been developing for an extended period, like the one he is currently teasing. It also explains why he can initiate a new idea while a completed film awaits release. For a director who admits to being driven by what comes next, this is a natural workflow.
Shyamalan has also been more open recently. In August, he launched a YouTube channel to engage with fans, describing it as an opportunity to reflect and connect. In his inaugural video, he showcased a bench outside his office where he goes to contemplate, expressing his desire to embrace the chaos of the creative process.
This tone resonates with the current moment. After three decades in filmmaking, Shyamalan seems eager to dismantle some of the stigmas surrounding his work. Sharing early glimpses of a new idea is part of that effort.
For now, there are more questions than answers. Shyamalan has not disclosed what the new project entails, when it might begin filming, or whether it will be released through Warner Bros. Given his history, a surprise announcement could arrive at any moment.
What is evident is that this idea has been with him for years. Following a series of successes, a bestselling novel collaboration, and a film he considers his highest-testing yet, he appears ready to finally bring it to fruition.
