An electric atmosphere filled the room at the Los Angeles premiere of ‘Voicemails for Isabelle’, where excitement was palpable as cast members and industry guests gathered at the Netflix Tudum Theater on June 16 to celebrate what is anticipated to be the streaming platform’s most awaited summer release.

On the red carpet, Lukas Gage and Madelyn Cline turned heads, posing in front of a Golden Gate Bridge backdrop that reflects the film’s San Francisco setting. Gage, portraying Arthur in the film, looked effortlessly stylish in a grey vest and matching trousers, while Cline, attending as a guest, made an entrance that showcased her rising star power.

The film’s leads, Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, also stole the spotlight, their chemistry evident at the premiere, mirroring the connection they develop throughout the film. Writer-director Leah McKendrick became emotional while introducing Deutch as her “cinematic muse,” emphasizing how the film beautifully intertwines deep heartache with genuine humor.

‘Voicemails for Isabelle’ follows Jill, played by Deutch, an aspiring pastry chef navigating the grief of her sister Isabelle’s death by leaving her voicemails. Complications arise when Isabelle’s phone number is reassigned to Wes, an enigmatic real estate agent portrayed by Robinson, who begins to fall for Jill as he hears her intimate thoughts.

Director McKendrick, who also stars as Breeda, Wes’s friend, was adamant about casting Deutch in the lead role, praising her unique ability to convey both profound sorrow and humor. “We always knew we needed an actor who was disarming and hilarious, yet excruciatingly raw,” McKendrick stated via Netflix Tudum. “No one can access all the colors quite like Zoey can.”

The film’s concept is both elegantly simple and timely. McKendrick has discussed how voicemails, being unedited and often messy, serve as a compelling medium for a love story in today’s social media-driven world. The film has drawn comparisons to beloved classics like ‘You’ve Got Mail’ and ‘Sleepless in Seattle’, a connection that is intentional.

In addition to Deutch and Robinson, the film features a talented supporting cast including Nick Offerman as Chef Bastien, Harry Shum Jr. as Andy, Ciara Bravo as Isabelle, Lukas Gage as Arthur, and Gil Bellows as Jill’s father, with music composed by Este Haim and Amanda Yamate. This ensemble adds a remarkable level of comedic talent to the project.

McKendrick humorously acknowledged the challenges of having so many comedic talents on set, joking that if the production were a middle school, Gage and Deutch would need to be separated. The camaraderie among the cast was evident as they supported one another at the premiere, with Gage and Cline being among the most photographed attendees of the night.

The film has had a notably long journey to release, initially announced in 2019 with Hailee Steinfeld set to star and Sharon Maguire directing, before McKendrick took over the project last May. Principal photography took place in Vancouver, Canada, and the completed film is set to premiere on Netflix in just a few days.
