Mahershala Ali Declares He’s ‘Done’ With Marvel’s ‘Blade’ Project
Few unmade superhero films have sparked as much speculation as Marvel’s long-awaited ‘Blade‘ reboot. What started as an exciting announcement at Comic-Con in 2019 has turned into one of the studio’s most talked-about development challenges, cycling through various directors, writers, and release dates without ever getting in front of a camera.
Mahershala Ali has been at the forefront of this saga, consistently addressing questions about the character’s future amid ongoing delays. Over the summer, the two-time Oscar winner hinted he was ready to move on, and now he’s making his stance even clearer.
In a recent conversation with Deadline at the Toronto International Film Festival, Ali made his feelings unmistakably clear, stating that he’s completely done with the project. This marks a straightforward continuation of his earlier comments in a GQ interview from July, where he bluntly indicated that a reboot wouldn’t be happening with him involved.
Ali’s frustration has been mounting for some time. In that GQ interview, he pointed out that Marvel had him under contract for years, yet the studio, despite its vast resources, chose not to proceed with the film. He emphasized that if Marvel genuinely wanted to make the movie, it would have already happened.
During that discussion, Ali also explained why he doesn’t regret how things turned out. He mentioned that he couldn’t have taken on both ‘Blade’ and his new film, ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,’ which only materialized because ‘Blade’ fell through. Director Bassam Tariq, who was initially set to direct the Marvel reboot before stepping away in 2022, ended up writing and directing ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’ for Ali instead.
This silver lining even extended to the physical training Ali underwent for the abandoned Marvel project. He shared that the sword training for ‘Blade’ proved beneficial for his role in the new film, allowing him to perform his own stunts in what he described as his first real action movie.
Marvel hasn’t contradicted Ali’s narrative either. Studio president Kevin Feige addressed the situation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, admitting he felt like a failure for not getting the project off the ground with Ali and explaining that the script never met the studio’s quality expectations.
Despite the public unraveling of ‘Blade,’ Ali’s relationship with Marvel isn’t entirely over. He is set to reprise his role as the voice of Aaron Davis in the upcoming ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,’ a character he has voiced since 2018. This ongoing involvement suggests that his frustrations are specifically related to the mismanaged live-action reboot rather than the studio as a whole.
For now, ‘Blade’ remains without a director, a finalized script, or any clear direction, years after Ali was first handed a symbolic sword on the Comic-Con stage. With his latest comments at TIFF, it’s evident that the actor has no plans to wait for any changes.
Whether Marvel will eventually recast the role or shelve the project entirely remains uncertain, but Ali has made it abundantly clear that he won’t be the one waiting to find out.
