‘Mare of Easttown’ Fans Should Watch ‘Task’ Season 2 for Exciting Crossover News
Fans of ‘Mare of Easttown’ have a fresh reason to be thrilled about HBO’s ‘Task’ Season 2. The upcoming season of the detective drama will feature a familiar face, as Julianne Nicholson reprises her role as Lori Ross, the character she portrayed in the Emmy-winning crime series ‘Mare of Easttown.’
This news creates an unexpected link between the two series, which were previously standalone projects. Both shows are crafted by creator and showrunner Brad Ingelsby and are set in working-class communities in the Philadelphia suburbs.
While HBO has confirmed Nicholson’s return as Lori Ross, specifics about how her character will integrate into the new storyline remain under wraps. It’s unclear whether her appearance will directly tie ‘Task’ Season 2 to the events of ‘Mare of Easttown’ or if it will simply feature a beloved character in a different investigation.
HBO’s official synopsis for the new season offers just a glimpse of what’s ahead. It reads: “Tom Brandis (Mark Ruffalo) takes the helm of a new task force, but the deeper the operation runs, the harder it is to tell who’s the target.”
Mark Ruffalo will lead the new season as Tom Brandis, joined by a growing ensemble that includes Mahershala Ali, Harry Melling, Adam Nagaitis, Aminah Nieves, and Edgar Ramirez.
Nicholson’s return is particularly exciting as Lori Ross became one of the most pivotal characters in ‘Mare of Easttown.’ The series, which debuted on HBO in 2021, starred Kate Winslet as Marianne “Mare” Sheehan, a detective unraveling the murder of a young mother while navigating her own personal challenges.

In the show, Nicholson portrayed Lori, Mare’s closest confidante. Lori’s family became intertwined with the main mystery when her son was drawn into the murder investigation. Nicholson’s performance garnered widespread acclaim, earning her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
The potential connection between ‘Task’ and ‘Mare of Easttown’ raises speculation about whether other characters might appear in the future. Fans have been eagerly anticipating a second season of ‘Mare of Easttown,’ despite the original series being designed as a limited series.
Kate Winslet and Brad Ingelsby have both previously discussed the possibility of continuing Mare’s story. In 2024, HBO drama head Francesca Orsi mentioned that there were initial talks about reviving the show. Earlier this year, Winslet also hinted that another season could be on the horizon, stating, “I think we probably will do it.”
For now, it remains uncertain if Winslet’s Mare Sheehan will ever cross paths with the world of ‘Task,’ but Nicholson’s casting has certainly opened the door for more exciting possibilities.
Beyond her role in ‘Mare of Easttown,’ Nicholson is recognized for her performances in projects like ‘Hacks,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ ‘The Outsider,’ and ‘Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.’ She also recently appeared in the series ‘Paradise’ and ‘Dope Girls.’
With ‘Task’ Season 2 uniting new characters alongside a familiar face from one of HBO’s most acclaimed crime dramas, the show is poised to create an intriguing connection to Ingelsby’s previous work.
