Mark Ruffalo Breaks Silence After Missing Promo Tours for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
Marvel’s promotional events typically feature a lineup of familiar faces, with cast members making appearances on talk shows, red carpets, and social media in the lead-up to a film’s release. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ followed this trend, showcasing Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Jon Bernthal on a relentless circuit of interviews and premieres.
However, one notable absence was Mark Ruffalo. Although he reprises his role as Bruce Banner and Hulk in a reportedly significant supporting role, Ruffalo did not participate in any major promotional interviews, press junkets, or red carpet events, a fact that became so noticeable that a viral post about it garnered over seven million views online.
Ruffalo has finally addressed the film, but not through the usual press channels that engaged his co-stars. Following the news that ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ set a box office record with $72 million in previews, surpassing ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Ruffalo shared a congratulatory message on his Instagram story, stating, “Congratulations to All! Sony and Marvel teams. Congratulations to our Cast and Crew. Congratulations Tom Holland and Destin Cretton. I had a blast with you!”

The silence leading up to this moment sparked considerable fan speculation. Some fans speculated that Marvel intentionally sidelined Ruffalo due to his history of accidentally revealing plot details in interviews, while others proposed various theories without substantial evidence.
The actual reason was much simpler. Ruffalo has reportedly been busy filming Season 2 of HBO Max’s ‘Task,’ which began production on July 9 in Manayunk, Philadelphia. This scheduling conflict made it logistically challenging for him to join the film’s extensive press circuit, regardless of any studio strategy.
Marvel’s overall promotional strategy for the film has also focused on safeguarding its biggest surprises. Several cast members have intentionally avoided discussing key plot points throughout the campaign, including details about Sadie Sink’s still-unnamed character and the specifics of Hulk’s role in the story. Keeping Ruffalo away from the press entirely was another tactic to ensure audiences experienced those reveals fresh in theaters rather than through pre-release interviews.
Ruffalo’s return as Bruce Banner marks his first significant live-action appearance since ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ and a brief cameo in ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.’ This role reportedly marks his tenth appearance as the character since debuting in 2012’s ‘The Avengers.’ The film is also significant for being the first time Hulk and Spider-Man have shared the screen together in live-action.
For a franchise known for its meticulously planned marketing campaigns, Ruffalo’s near-total absence from the promotional cycle is an unusual choice, even with a reasonable scheduling explanation. His Instagram message, which came only after the film’s record-breaking numbers were revealed, seems less like a calculated silence and more like an actor catching up with the moment from the sidelines.

Regardless, fans now have confirmation that Ruffalo was indeed observing the film’s success unfold in real time, even if he wasn’t at the forefront during the buildup. Now, audiences can discover for themselves what kept him so occupied that even Marvel’s marketing machine couldn’t secure his presence.
