Fox’s original X-Men trilogy significantly influenced how superhero movies are perceived, paving the way long before the MCU became the powerhouse it is today. Iconic actors like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and Rebecca Romijn brought characters to life that would inspire two decades of comic book films, even as their segment of the Marvel universe was sidelined when Disney and Marvel Studios established their own continuity.

This separation came to an end with Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, which brought the rights to the mutants back under one umbrella. This sparked years of speculation about how and when these beloved legacy characters would finally make their return. Fans received their first significant confirmation during a teaser for ‘Doomsday’ that was shown ahead of screenings for ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’, marking the long-awaited return of Charles Xavier, Magneto, and Cyclops after more than a decade.

The excitement has now reached new heights. The official artwork showcasing the complete X-Men lineup for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ confirms seven mutants standing together in the film: Gambit, Mystique, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Beast, Magneto, and Professor X.

All four original cast members from the 2000 film ‘X-Men’—Stewart, McKellen, Marsden, and Romijn—are reprising their roles. They are joined by Kelsey Grammer, who returns as Beast, and Alan Cumming, stepping back into the role of Nightcrawler for the first time since 2003’s ‘X2: X-Men United’. Channing Tatum is also back as Gambit, continuing the role he finally portrayed in ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Wolverine’, after years of attempting to launch a solo Gambit film at Fox.

The costume designs revealed alongside the lineup pay homage to the comics, with Cyclops, Mystique, and Nightcrawler donning looks that are true to their comic origins. Magneto is seen in a red-toned version of his original suit from the X-Men trilogy, while Professor X returns to his classic silver wheelchair, moving away from the yellow hoverchair seen in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. Beast also sports a notable redesign, appearing shirtless for the first time in live action, showcasing his blue fur-covered torso instead of the lab coat or uniform he previously wore.

Nightcrawler’s presence has reignited fan hopes that the film will finally confirm Mystique as his mother, a connection teased in ‘X2’ but never fully explored in ‘X-Men Apocalypse’ or ‘X-Men Dark Phoenix’, despite the characters sharing screen time. Leaked footage from an early screening reportedly showed Channing Tatum’s Gambit in a confrontation with Shang-Chi, alongside a chaotic battle featuring Mystique against Yelena Belova, utilizing her shapeshifting abilities to create multiple versions of the assassin on screen.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is set to release on December 18, 2026, featuring a star-studded ensemble that includes Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, and Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, along with the Fantastic Four cast of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss Bachrach. With the new official artwork confirming the central role of the X-Men in this massive ensemble, it seems Marvel is finally ready to give this long-awaited crossover the attention fans have been craving for years.
