Marvel’s Next Big Swing Could Be Its Grittiest Yet with Detective Series
Marvel Studios has spent nearly a decade crafting a universe characterized by cosmic stakes, multiverse chaos, and larger-than-life heroics. As ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ approaches and the franchise prepares for its next chapter, the studio has also been quietly exploring smaller, genre-driven storytelling.
This experimentation has yielded mixed results. Marvel’s television division faced a shakeup this year after canceling ‘Wonder Man’ following its second-season renewal, while shows like ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ and various animated projects continue to progress. Nevertheless, insiders indicate that there’s more brewing behind the scenes than fans might anticipate.
Recently, a fresh wave of speculation suggests that Marvel Studios is developing a detective series, with reports indicating a project inspired by the moody, character-driven crime drama ‘True Detective.’ This claim originated from entertainment insider Jeff Sneider, who described the concept as having a “procedural” aspect during a podcast appearance, though he refrained from naming any characters or confirming a cast.
The comparison to ‘True Detective’ is no coincidence. Sneider reportedly likened the project to DC Studios’ own noir-inspired series ‘Lanterns’, which similarly reimagines a well-known comic property through the lens of a grounded crime investigation rather than traditional superhero spectacle.
Since Sneider didn’t disclose specifics, fans have begun connecting the dots themselves. Given that Marvel’s street-level roster is limited in dedicated investigators, speculation has focused on Jessica Jones, the hard-drinking private eye who operates Alias Investigations and was recently reintroduced in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’. With Luke Cage and Iron Fist expected to return for that show’s third season, some fans theorize that a detective series could serve as a loose reunion for Heroes for Hire.
Adding to the intrigue, other reports have mentioned a working codename resembling “Ahmmed Stone” or “Ammit Stone” linked to a mysterious Marvel project set to begin filming as early as February. It remains unclear whether this codename pertains to the detective series or an entirely different Special Presentation, and some chatter has even suggested that the secretive project could veer into spy-thriller territory rather than a procedural format. Additional reports have also indicated that Marvel may have two Special Presentations quietly in development for 2027, complicating the picture further.
The timing aligns with broader rumors that Marvel’s Disney+ slate is far from complete. Despite not announcing any new series at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and D23, multiple live-action projects are reportedly in the works, with official reveals anticipated soon. Marvel Television and Marvel Animation are scheduled to hold a panel at New York Comic Con on October 8, raising hopes that concrete details, and perhaps confirmation of the detective series, could emerge there.
For a studio often criticized for relying too heavily on formula, a stripped-down crime drama would represent a significant tonal shift. It would also provide Marvel with an opportunity to explore new facets of its universe without the burden of directly tying into blockbuster film continuity, something the studio has reportedly aimed to do more of following its recent television course correction.
Nothing has been confirmed by Marvel Studios, and details remain fluid enough that even the project’s format—whether it will be a full series, procedural, or one-off Special Presentation—is still up for discussion. Fans eager for Jessica Jones’s noir-soaked return will have to wait for official confirmation.
