Marvel’s Spider-Man, X-Men and Fantastic Four Launch Dark Horror Comic Series
Marvel Comics is venturing into darker realms later this year with the introduction of a new publishing line called the Midnight Universe.
This new initiative will completely reimagine iconic characters such as Spider-Man, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four in horror-centric narratives filled with monsters, violence, and psychological terror.

The Midnight Universe officially kicks off in August 2026 with ‘Midnight X-Men’, penned by Jonathan Hickman and illustrated by Matteo Della Fonte. Additional series will follow, including ‘Midnight Fantastic Four’ by Benjamin Percy and Kev Walker, as well as ‘Midnight Spider-Man’ by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and artist Scie Tronc.
Marvel describes the Midnight Universe as a darker, more unpredictable take on its classic mythology. These stories will shift away from traditional superhero adventures, diving deep into horror themes and unsettling transformations. In this reimagined Marvel world, the X-Men are no longer advocates for peace and acceptance; instead, they are entangled with vampires and bloodshed, with tensions between species on the brink of war.

Jonathan Hickman expressed his excitement about returning to the X-Men for this project, stating, “I’m so enthusiastic about this project—it’s the most excited I’ve been in years. The conceit of ‘MIDNIGHT X-MEN’ aligns perfectly with the kind of stories I like to tell.”
The Fantastic Four are also undergoing a significant horror transformation. Marvel’s description reveals that the team’s iconic origin story will now focus on terrifying cosmic discoveries that alter the characters into something monstrous. Benjamin Percy described the comic as a full immersion into cosmic horror influenced by darker storytelling styles.
“When I imagined this other version of Marvel—a terrifying, poisoned universe—my mind immediately went to the Fantastic Four,” Percy noted. “Now I could lean into my worst instincts and reimagine their story as one of cosmic, Lovecraftian dread.”

Spider-Man may undergo the most shocking transformation of all. In ‘Midnight Spider-Man’, Peter Parker becomes a horrifying spider-human hybrid after experiments linked to Oscorp go terribly wrong. Rather than being the friendly neighborhood hero fans are familiar with, this version of Peter embraces his monstrous form while battling new human-animal hybrids.

Phillip Kennedy Johnson hinted at how different these comics will be from Marvel’s usual offerings, stating, “We’re reinventing these timeless characters in a way that’s never been done. You will see things in these books that shock you.”
Marvel Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski explained that the company encouraged creators to explore darker themes and take risks with beloved characters. He likened the Midnight Universe to previous alternate Marvel lines like the Ultimate Universe, but emphasized that this new line delves much deeper into horror and psychological storytelling.
The announcement has already sparked significant interest among comic fans online, as Marvel seldom pushes its most prominent heroes into horror territory simultaneously. Typically associated with adventure and action, the Midnight Universe clearly aims for a more unsettling experience.
‘Midnight X-Men’ #1 is set to debut on August 5, followed by ‘Midnight Fantastic Four’ in September and ‘Midnight Spider-Man’ in October.
