Marvel Television has quietly crafted one of the most captivating segments of the MCU through Disney+, intertwining ‘WandaVision’ and ‘Agatha All Along’ into a trilogy that continually revisits the haunting question: what becomes of an AI when everything it cherished is lost.

This trilogy is approaching its conclusion, and the series that will wrap it up has remained notably secretive about its plans. Kevin Feige briefly acknowledged the project during Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, confirming that the weekend’s focus would be on films rather than television, leaving fans eager for any new information.

That anticipation has just been satisfied in an unexpected manner. New official merchandise for ‘VisionQuest’ has provided the first proper glimpse of both Paul Bettany’s Vision and James Spader’s Ultron, showcased through a pair of newly released Funko Pop figures instead of a conventional marketing strategy.

The Vision figure aligns closely with expectations, mirroring his look from ‘WandaVision’, but his human form is depicted holding a newspaper titled “Vision Today,” suggesting a stylized inner-world narrative unfolding within his mind. This detail aligns with earlier reports indicating that Vision will spend much of the series navigating his memories and consciousness.

Conversely, Ultron’s figure introduces genuine surprises. His robotic appearance closely resembles his final design from ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, but his human counterpart features James Spader with glasses, a beard, and a notably different personal style, marking the character’s first-ever human representation using Spader’s actual likeness instead of just his voice.

This alteration signifies a substantial transformation for one of the MCU’s most notorious villains. Previously, Spader only voiced Ultron as a CGI robot, and reports suggest that the character will now operate less like the drone-commanding warlord from 2015 and more as a psychological threat residing directly within Vision’s mind, allowing the show to delve into his cruelty and intelligence from a more intimate perspective.

Bettany has previously hinted at what viewers can anticipate from this dynamic, describing Vision’s mind as more chaotic than expected. He mentioned that Vision has been saving and copying various AI personalities to preserve them within his consciousness, with Ultron specifically kept behind a particularly heavy firewall due to his dangerously unstable nature.

Reactions to Ultron’s redesigned human form have already sparked mixed feelings among fans. Some have embraced the change enthusiastically, with one social media user stating it is the primary reason for their excitement about the series, while others have expressed skepticism about seeing the character represented through Spader’s face rather than his classic robotic form.

‘VisionQuest’ also broadens its cast beyond Vision and Ultron, bringing several of Tony Stark’s AI systems to life as fully realized human characters. Emily Hampshire will portray E.D.I.T.H., Orla Brady takes on the role of F.R.I.D.A.Y., and James D’Arcy returns as J.A.R.V.I.S., while T’Nia Miller makes her MCU debut as Jocasta, following the character’s brief tease years ago in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’.

With Marvel expected to unveil the show’s first full trailer during its D23 presentation in mid-August, this merchandise-driven reveal may just be the beginning of a more extensive rollout. For now, fans are left to piece together what Ultron’s unsettling new form signifies for the story ahead.
